Honors Quest vs. Honors Connections

Both 1 credit. Both for freshman. Both seem to be ways for the honors college to help the freshman get acclimated & launch well. Both only for half the semester. Seems like Honors Quest has both professor & student leader led sessions, while Honors Connections is only student leader led sessions.

Any insight into one vs. the other? Thanks!

I think one is for the freshmen and one is for the upperclassmen leaders. However, the upperclassmen leaders do not have to take the credits.

Have any of you students out there taken Honors Connections and, if so, do you think it’s worthwhile?

My older son is one of the Peer Mentors and he would say it’s worth it for freshmen. He and his other Peer Partner scheduled two evening a week (the frosh then chose one eve which worked for them ) to meet with their group. They’d incorporate a fun activity - like going to eat - with the Peer mentoring. They also do other fun things like bowling, scavenger hunts, etc.

The Peer Mentors are paired up and given about 15 freshmen. The time with their group is spent talking about school concerns and such (and having fun).

Hmmm…based on the wording of the two class descriptions, I’m not sure about that M2CK:

HONORS EXPLORATIONS (1 credit)
Honors Quest: Cultivating Academic Excellence
Navigating through multiple opportunities provided by the University can be both exciting and challenging. Through a combination of discussions facilitated by leading professors and UA administrators and small group meetings, students will gain the insight and skills needed to maximize their college experience. The small group meetings will be led by UA student leaders who will serve as peer mentors. Designed to be a launching pad for the college years, this class will meet twice a week for the first eight weeks of the semester only.

HONORS CONNECTION (1 credit – P/F)
Mentors provide freshmen students with academic insight, encourage them to take part in campus activities, and serve as a friend during their pivotal transition into college. Through the development of these relationships, this one-hour course seeks to further establish the Honors living-learning community. UH120 012-028

That’s why I’m confused; they seem “almost” the same.

Ok…now I’m mixed up.

It does sound like both groups meet with mentors.

Someone should email Dr. Morgan and ask for a clarification.

The two programs are very similar. They seem to be the for-credit college version of Link Crew (hs orientation) and ms orientation. I can see how it is worthwhile for many students, but I do not think it’s absolutely necessary for an incoming student to take. If your child wanted to take a 1-credit honors course, I highly recommend the Common Book Experience classes.

Phew! It’s not just me  I’ll ask D to shoot Dr. Morgan an email on Monday and see what the difference is.

i think they are both pretty much the same thing except one is not for credit (so one wouldn’t go over the 16 credit limit.)

^ you mean the former 16 credit limit - right? wanted to make sure you got the news :)

yeah i got the news. but at bama bound when it was explained, that is how they explained it, i think.

did anyone ever check with the engineering department to see if they got the memo for those that they are covering the last 1/3 of tuition for?

No, I don’t think that’s it; they’re both showing up as 1 credit courses. Honors Connections says it’s pass/fail though.
