Honors Residential Communities & Housing

Collins is one of the Hutton college HRC’s (Honor Residential Communities). Since my younger girl made it into Hutton she’s looking into going to IU and she can apply there. The catch is no air conditioning in rooms. She likely wants a single room (well, the parents do :)) ). Is that survivable in Aug-Sep and May? She’s the intellectual type, and I think she would prefer like minded people.

Any thoughts on the chance of getting a single room, and also given the latest Lady Luck based selection process (select neighborhood not dorm) is it safe to assume it’s all too random to worry about?

Have your daughter check out the Residence Scholars program. All rooms are singles with their own window AC in Ashton. Admission into this program is one of the few ways to guarantee a building choice with a single room (she’ll get in).

The dorm is filled with a mix of upper and lower classmen who all meet the GPA requirement and do a chore each week (light cleaning) in exchange for a huge discount on the room (parents love this).

The vibe is diverse (all majors), friendly, and somewhat serious without being too nerdy. Living there has been great for me as I have made many friends outside my class and major that I never would have met elsewhere.

The dorm is not the newest by any means, but is in a great location unless she’s taking a lot of hard science classes in the SE area and minds walking ten minutes to class. The only downside I have experienced is that there is no C-store or food service in Ashton, but that’s hardly a problem given the number of close food options.

BTW, no AC is survivable but that’s about it IMHO. It’s a real pleasure to get back to my room and crank my own AC as high as I like during the brutal weeks after sweating my way across campus.

I am living in Wright, and it has no AC. It honestly was not an issue at all except for sleeping. I had the top bunk, so I couldn’t have a fan blowing on me at night. I think it would have been perfectly fine if I was sleeping on the bottom, and during the day it wasn’t an issue at all with fans going in the room. I do prefer to be too hot over too cold though

I would recommend Teter for non-Kelley honor students since that is the only Honor floor in Center. I don’t believe Collins has Honor floor. DS1 stayed in Collins because he applied too late and I joked about the WoW-LLC.
