Hook'em Fall O9 Freshman!! <<<< and a bit of housing..

Got accepted in early october.. barely found the sit :)

And been stressing about the housing because i really want to get into San Jac or Duren, Finally got my housing contract a week ago and sent it the day i got it so hopefully i get those two... i also been looking into private dorms but unsure... so where are my fellow Fall 09 Freshman? :) I"m Chris btw.. for anyone that cares.. haha..

hey chris. ill also be attending UT in the fall, and hoping to get into san jacinto too.

I paid the $50...will that reserve a spot for my choice? or do i have to pay the $200?

That 50 dollars and that 200 dollars won't do a damn thing as to staying in Duren and San Jac or the place of your choice unless you choose to live in Jester. If you didn't apply to the school( and subsequently apply for housing thereafter) early enough, then your out of luck. If I understand the new rule, they give priority based on when you applied for housing( the 50 dollar thing) after applying for the school. So if your submitting your app now, your not going to get San Jac or Duren more than likely. Its a better way then before, but for people who don't know the rules, they are going to get shafted same as before.

If you applied for housing early, your fine, so long as you return the contract in a very timely manner. There is a rep that post here from time to time(UThousing i think) that can tell it to you correctly if I am wrong. I didn't deal with this particular system when I applied. They also have an aim screen name setup to do a direct chat, I would def give it a try to ease your worries.

ok thats cool..i have already been accepted and paid the $50 about a month ago...just gotta pay the 200 now

So if I apply for housing right now (I've already been accepted into the Cockrell School of Engineering) then I won't get into San Jacinto most likely? What are the good dorms that can still be open if I apply for housing in the next couple of days? Is Jester the only remaining dorm?

There are only 2 good dorms in terms of niceness. Whatever is left will be only slightly better than Jester in terms of size. However, it might be a better environment at different res halls.

Are the honors dorms reserved for honors program students? What I mean is that I'm not ready to apply for housing yet, and I am still applying for dean's and turing (essays...). If I did get into one of these programs, am I guaranteed honors housing, or could I lose a dorm to someone outside of honors? I'm worried because it seems like the good dorms are going fast.

I don't know about honors housing, or how that works. All I know is that UT has a pretty big problem in that if you want good housing, you have to know how the system works before your senior year starts. If are still looking at places come Fall of your senior year, your already too late probably. While the housing policy has changed since I was there, the same basic things apply. You apply for housing whether or not you actually want to go here, and you apply for housing ASAP. As it turns out, now housing is tied to your application, so that means you have to submit your app ASAP. Before they used to be 2 separate entities, so that even if you didn't know if you would apply to UT, you would still apply for housing because you want to guarantee your pick.

OK thanks foxshox. That's a stressful system...I'm not even sure I will be attending UT, and my finances are pretty bad right now so I don't have the $50 nevermind the $200. I guess I'm too late; I feel much less certain about attending now.

Yeah the system really has no place for the people between those eligible for financial aid and the people who can afford to go there with no financial help.

The system sucks badly because I fall in this category.

There is a waiver for the housing application fee ($50) and the Advance Payment ($300) if you are truly needy. File the forms with the admission's office to have them waive your admissions application fee and your enrollment deposit and you are automatically waived for housing.

There are many other halls that are nice. Whitis Courts for FIGS is where I would want my kids to live. MooreHill has a great community and is in a great location. Jester is still the most popular.

Whitis does look nicer than the Jester and Moorehill... and while Jester might be the most "popular", I think that if San Jac or Duren were bigger, a lot of people would default to that. I think its pretty obvious that the biggest dorms will always be the most popular.

Another quick question for UTHousing... All the buildings on Whitis are air-conditioned now, hopefully? Back when I lived there in the mid-80s (when those were co-ops), our house did not have central air.

I have never been in Whitis, but I think it is generally accepted practice to have air conditioning in the dorms all over Texas. If it was any other way, it would be Hell come August, so I feel bad that you didn't have it in the 80's.

Yes, Whitis does have an A/C. My sister stayed there a few years ago and loved it.

I asked last year - Yes, all of the dorms at UT have good air conditioning.
