this is sort of a weird question but

i get how in a traditional dorm experience you meet people. in the common bathroom, hallways, or common room. you can then easily plan to go down and get breakfast together, go out, etc.

but how does it work in the hotel residences (new res and c4)? do people tend to pry open their doors, since hotel doors auto shut? do more people hang out in the hallways and common rooms, seeing as there is not a common bathroom since every room has its own private one? does that make it harder to go get breakfast with a friend? will you end up going down alone to the cafeteria and having to try and find a friend more often than going down together?

these are really weird questions, i know, but they are kinda important to me. would appreciate any answers. thank you!

EDIT: also, are there usually more international students in the hotel residences than in, say, RVC?

im also choosing between RVC, C4, and New Rez.

“will you end up going down alone to the cafeteria and having to try and find a friend more often than going down together”
I totally get the idea of going to eat with a friend!

the last thing i wanna do is eat alone

i guess its more easier in dorms, and i was willing to sacrifice a private bathroom for having a more social rez at RVC. They also have the best caf since it was renovated last year

yeah, rvc’s new caf sounds really nice. im getting hungry just thinking about it.

the only bad thing about rvc for me is the non coed aspect (as in single sex floor, though coed building). im just soooo confused…

i’m going to just randomly decide tomorrow. im overthinking this a little bit haha. whatever, they are all good haha. thanks for the reply and if we both get into rvc maybe ill see ya there!

I’m seriously lured by the notion of having my own private bathroom. Especially when I think of how cold it’ll be from the washroom to my room during the winter. And food is definitely one of my top priorities. Personally, for these reasons, I placed New Rez as my #1 choice.

I was most enticed by the idea of having a private bathroom as well. I do not care about using public lavatories, but I do enjoy having a private shower. I remember visiting Brandeis and being not so taken with the shower facilities in the Dorm I saw. So in the end, I went with C4 as my top, though I put RVC second.

I can’t say anything definitively, since it will be my first year come fall, however I imagine there is still a very community oriented feel in the hotel-style rooms. Sure, you are not using a public bathroom, but there are still common lounges and study areas, and I doubt people would be any less inclined to eat in a group at a hotel rez than in a traditional dorm. I don’t think it would be particularly difficult to prop open a hotel door either - just put in a stopper.

Though you couldn’t spend most of your dining points in the RVC cafe, and, in my opinion, the hotel residences don’t look nearly as nice (on the outside anyway) as RVC and some of the castle style ones.
