I’m coming to visit the university sometime very soon, hopefully next week, and trying to find somewhere very cheap to stay. Does anyone know of a cheap hotel within walking distance of the university (about two miles or less, through safe neighborhoods)? Something like a student hostel would be perfect.

Thanks for any advice, I’m working on a limited budget and appreciate the help.

Are you a student or an adult? If you're a student applicant, the Bruin Club (http://www.brown.edu/Students/Bruin_Club/overnight.html) can put you up with a current student. This is definitely the way to go, because it's free, and you get an additional perspective on real campus life.

If you didn't want to do an overnight (or can't if you're a transfer) you can try the Brown Inn, but only if you're over 25 or with an adult. I'm staying at the Old Court b n' b when I visit Brown. It was the cheapest place I could find within walking distance: $115 per night for 1-2 people. If you call Brown Admissions they might have some more options. They're really helpful, as they recommended Old Court to me. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I am not eligible for the Bruin Club program; I'm a 24-year-old prospective grad student.

I will call the Inn at Brown University tomorrow morning when it opens. $115/night is well above what I had hoped to spend on this trip.

the radisson is 109 the in at brown in 110 i hope that this helps

I actually ended up getting a room through Hotwire; it turns out to be close to the university and $60/night. Something other visiting students might consider...

so what is the hotel i did not think i would be able to find any thing closer i would appreciate some help too thank you for your time and efforts

The hotel I ended up at is the Radisson. However, you will not be able to choose the hotel if you go through Hotwire. Hotwire.com is able to sell rooms at lower rates because the hotel remains anonymous (no one would pay $115/night for a hotel if they could see that it was being offered online elsewhere for $60/night) until you have committed yourself to buying it by entering your credit card number.

However, if you go to the Hotwire site you can select the hotel's geographic location, ensuring that it will not be more than a mile or so from the university.
