Does anyone know of some cheap hotels (or even motels, for that matter) around Yale for a one-night stay?

Several things to factor in:

Price Range?
Waking distance to campus?
What time of year?

Courtyard Marriott is good. So is the Omni. Both are on the expensive side but right next to campus and nice.

Does anyone know of the Super 8 Hotel? The price is cheap, but does that mean that it's in a shady part of New Haven?

Is that the one in Milford? If so, it is located on a very busy road, about 15 minutes by car to New Haven. It is surrounded by shopping malls, chain restaurants, etc. I don't know anything about it. There is a Howard Johnsons across the way. If you can afford to stay at the Marriot in Orange, I would choose that. It is around the same distance to campus (still in suburban highway land) but it is very nice.

In late August, my kid is coming to Yale for one week for doing an internship. His work will require him to be on campus from 9 -5 PM. I am looking for some insights so I can manage my schedule:

Are dorms available during summer time to kids if they come and work for the university? If not what are the reasonably priced hotels that offer breakfast (say may be $60-70 priced range)?

Is university cafeteria open to visitors during breakfast and lunch?

How about parking scene in the university? Do they have enough parking spots available for visitors? Where we can get parking information?

Since we are on campus, does admission office start interviewing kids for incoming class during that time?

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

I don't know if your son's internship is arranged informally or through the university. If you arranged this yourself (i.e. through a friend who works there or through a Dept,) then you should immediately do a few things:

Contact whomever is arranging the internship. My niece did one in a science lab a few summers ago. The lab supervisor (also a professor) was going to have to put her up. We live about 15 minutes from campus, so we offered her to live with us. My husband and I drove her back and forth.

Contact the Yale housing office. They could provide info on everthing else, including info on parking, dining halls etc. There are several summer programs at Yale and there are students here during that time.

Yale admissions office is also open year round. Contact them.

No I do not know anyone in Yale. kid worked it out with a program. I am just trying to be a driver and helper for my kid.

I would be looking information on Yale Housing. Thanks

The program --have they arranged something like this before? Hopefully, someone there can also help. Good luck!

Internship
1. Hmm, the dorms are usually used for Summer Session and other official programs. I've never heard of internships that let you live in the dorms. Contact whoever's in charge.
2. The dining halls, not cafeterias, are always open to visitors. However, only 3 of the 13 main ones are open this summer. The earliest opens June 4th. They close August 11th.
3. Yale's pretty tight-knit when it comes to the residential colleges, so parking lots aren't around the main campus. Check here www.yale.edu/parkingandtransit/parking/visitors.htm.
4. The 2006-07 on-campus interviewing program runs from June 29 through August 25.

We stayed at the Colony, and I wouldn't do it again. We also stayed at the Courtyard and had a fantastic room at a very reasonable price.

I doubt you will be able to get a place in a dorm. You may be able to find a one week apartment rental on Craigslist or the Yale housing website.

Parking in New Haven is invconvenient because most on street spaces are metered and even then you're only allowed to stay in the same place for 2hrs. There are a few 12 hr parking spaces (some on Trumbull St. near Payne Whitney Gym) but very hard to find. There are many parking garages that run ~$15/day. If you need to park all day and don't want to spend the money to park, I would personnally suggest parking in the East Rock neigborhood north east of campus. If you park north of Lawrence Street (on Lawrence, Cotton, Avon, Linden, etc) you do not need a parking permit and there are always lots of spaces. From there it's about a 15min walk to main campus. Just watch for signs about street sweeping days. Tickets run $50 for that.

Is this the Yale Daily News program?

Yes YDN program. I need to buy a map of new haven. Thanks for your suggestion. I am going to look for nearby hotels. Thanks

chrism,

What exactly was bad about Colony? I'm actually currently looking to book a room at Colony, so I'd appreciate your comments.

As well, which Marriott did you stay at? Courtyard or Fairfield?
