where to stay

parents of son going abroad to yale in class of 2013. all information about coming with him to see him settle in will be welcome.

I stayed at the Omni Hotel on Temple street, which is an excellent location if you S is in one of the 10 residential colleges whose freshmen are on Old Campus. We sent boxes to the Omni a day or two ahead of our arrival and they were brought to our room once we checked in. They provided campus/area maps and info sheets with names/locations of places such as Ikea, Wal-Mart, Target, Bed, Bath & Beyond, etc. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There was an evening reception for Yale parents Thursday and Friday night. Be warned the Omni is rather expensive and parking cost extra. Good Luck

Other hotels within walking distance of the campus include The Study, Courtyard Marriott, and the New Haven Hotel. If you belong to a reciprocal club, the private Quinnipiack Club is the best deal around. There are also some B&Bs within walkable distances, but I don’t know their names and have no idea about quality. Cheaper hotels are 10-15 minutes by car from campus, so you’d have to add the cost of a rental on top of the hotel. MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS NOW. You may already be stuck with the hotels far from campus.

Other parents have posted that it is worth planning to stay for the Master’s Tea; as you are coming from abroad, you might want to make something of a visit out of the weekend.

Any comments regarding La Quinta Inn hotel?

Thanks,
MC2013

I stayed at the Courtyard Marriott when I visited Yale and it was an extremely nice hotel, very accommodating, and pretty close to everything. It also wasn’t terribly expensive, and they have a lot of Yale paraphernalia on the walls, even in the rooms, so it kind of gets you in the mood  They also have a big parking garage if you were planning on renting a car.

Congratulations on your son’s admission to Yale though, that’s a big deal! Good luck.

Just be aware that at peak times (i.e. move-in, Parents’ Weekend, etc.) the prices at the Courtyard and all the other hotels go up accordingly. That said, we love the Courtyard too, as we can park when we get there and never have to take the car out again until we leave. D is in Stiles, which is right across the street, and walking to and from Pepe’s burns off some of the calories from the pizza. :)

I just inquired about Courtyard Marriott and it’s very pricey $199 a night.

For 8/26 thru 8/28, no transportations from & to airport, no Yale discount rates for new or old students, etc…

Hi MC2013, we have stayed at La Quinta many times. The rooms are fine, it includes breakfast, and there is a hotel shuttle that will take you over to Yale as well as pick you up at the train station (I’m not sure about airport–you could check on that). Courtyard Marriott is almost always pricey, especially at key parent visit times of year like Parents Weekend, graduation, etc. So, we’ve only stayed there when we’ve been there at other times of the year. Omni, of course, is very nice, but also pricey. We’ve always found LaQuinta very reasonable in cost. Not to mention the IKEA is next door :-)

Thanks, Clarimom! I didn’t know IKEA was right next door to La Quinta–super convenient!

Thanks so much for your input, we have decided to stay at LaQuinta and have our boxes shippped to the hotel for the moving in day.

awesome that IKEA is next door!

Has anyone stayed at the Marriott in the City of Orange (about 6 miles from Yale)? Is it a safe area?

I think I had relatives stay at the Courtyard Marriott many years ago for a family event. They seemed comfortable there and liked it, and they were fairly affluent picky people. (The Omni was booked.)
