Housing and Dorms

Hi-
There is a fairly good chance that I will be going to Michigan next year, and I was wondering about housing. What is the best housing for freshmen? Is there any apartment style housing for frosh? What is the best location to live in for LSA students? Is north campus really far away?

Hey,
I'm currently a freshman at michigan and thought i would give some input on the dorms here that would be available.
As far as picking your dorm, you don't really have any say the first year. On the housing application you get to pick either north campus or hill/central. Its pretty random in the end.
Right now I live in markley, which has the reputation as "the best freshman dorm", personally I'm not happy with it. The rooms are tiny, but most dorm rooms are and when putting 1200 freshman together in one building you know it's gonna get crazy. If your really into partying, drinking, rude people it's the place to be i guess from my experience. If you prefer i to come back to a quiet environment, you may want to look else where...
I can honestly say north campus is NOT as bad as people make it out to be! Its about a 15 minute bus right down to the central part of campus and the buses come about every 10 minutes. The north campus environment is much calmer and "homey" I think. Yea, taking a bus to get to classes can be a pain, but if you do end up stuck there it's not the end of the world!
theres lot of other dorms on the hill area as well as central, literally minutes from your main classes in lsa, but most are for learning community students which you can apply for on the housing application, I think some require an essay maybe? applying to a learning community can be a good way to make sure you get a certain dorm if accepted.
any other questions, i'd be happy to give more... :)

Markley sounds fun besides the rude people! Drinking and partying sit well for me.

And I heard it's a b i t c h to ride the buses back from central campus especially when its the last bus going back to north on a weekend night because all the extremely drunk ppl are puking on it. Just what I heard from a girl who lives on North.

which campus (or more specifically what dorms) are closest to classes taken by freshmen in kinesiology?

Do all engineering students have to live in North Campus? When I visited it I got really lost trying to get there!

Thanks ktwish! My mom actually lived in Markley in 1979. I guess I will just put Central/Hill and see where they put me.

I live on North Campus and my dorm itself (Bursley) is alright. It takes 15 min to get to Central and the buses are quite frequent, every 10 min or so. Not the best location, but I think 1/3rd of the freshman class is on North and as ktwish pointed out, people tend to be friendlier just because everyone's stuck together so far away.

PS - I think the late night buses are more entertaining than anything else. :)
