I was looking around for information on housing at UIUC and whether housing is first come first serve and I wasn't able to find any. I want to know in case I need to pay for a housing deposit or if they wait until after final registration date.

On another note, does anyone know speeds of internet at UIUC? Fast, slow, unreliable, etc. Thanks.

I was admitted to UIUC back in December and I received a list of housing options in the mail almost a month ago. I believe that you cannot register for housing until you have accepted your admissions to the university. I would imagine that it is first come first serve. Since the school is very well known for engineering and science, I’m sure they have pretty fast internet, idk just a guess :)

Housing is not first come first serve. It used to be, but it no longer is. How the system works now is that there is a priority housing deadline (it was May 15 last year). Students who file their housing app before then are allotted rooms based on a random lottery system that takes into consideration their order of choices for a dorm as well as their roommate requests. If you apply after the priority deadline, you are put in rooms on a space availability basis and will probably end up in temporary housing.

As for internet, speeds are pretty good, especially if you’re using a computer in a library or computer lab. There’s wireless in pretty much every campus building and it’s good enough to watch HD YouTube videos if you wanted to :)
