My daughter was accepted to Michigan early action but waiting to see where else she gets in come April. I was told that the housing situation at Michigan is difficult and that even if you don't know for sure that you will be attending that you should send in the $200 deposit to get priority for housing. But the information we received suggests that there is a lottery for anyone who submits their housing application by May. Should we send in the deposit even if we aren't sure that is where she will be going?

lbpontel - you might try contacting the housing department at the school to find out how they do the assignments. At the school where my daughter attends those who send in deposit early were more likely to be in doubles, the later the deposit was sent in the greater chance to be in a triple.

My daughter was very indecisive in the end so we sent deposit just before the deadline. She received a notice that she was in a triple. However, a very sad event occurred … the third room mate was killed in a car accident while TEXTING.

We were very shocked to learn this by googling her on the internet and finding the obituary and story about her. (My daughter googled her after attempting to contact her many times on Facebook and on the college site and received no response.) Sadly I think many people do not realize how deadly the combination of driving and texting is as we’ve heard of three instances of this close to us last summer including this room mate and another was a young father just home from Iraq when a young woman was texting while driving and hit him.

My daughter ended up in a double because of that sad event.

^ Not sure what school jerseygirl is talking about, but that’s not how things work at U of M. As long as you pay your deposit by May 1st, and fill out the housing app by May 5th (or something around this date), you’ll get priority with everyone else. The earliest ANYONE can apply for housing anyways is early April so paying the deposit now would be a complete waste.

Also, I’m pretty sure what ever room type (double, triple, etc) you request at U of M, you’ll get. The hard part is getting the location you want.
