Housing email to parent

Just got an email to my email about housing info, which said son would have gotten an email about housing on his crimson account.

I checked his crimson email, and there is nothing there.

Is it possible it’s just delayed, or should I email someone at housing to make sure he didn’t get left out?

We have paid both the enrollment deposit and housing deposit.

Any other parent get this email, but it’s not in child’s crimson mail yet?

I got one today, DS got one yesterday…

not for nothing, but I have a copy of his UA email correspondence sent to a separate home email address (from the forwarding setting in UA email), that way we’re sure not to miss it if it comes in. He’s not quite used to checking his UA email box just yet.

I did that forwarding setting, too, thanks to mom, but it goes to his yahoo account. This email was sent to my email. I’ll call Bama Monday if we don’t get it over the weekend.
Thanks for the replies.

I got one in my personal (parent) email, and also one was forwarded from his UA email to his “everything college” account that both he and I also monitor.

For some reason, I used to be the only one who got the Housing emails. I don’t know if it’s because when DS1 applied to the school, he put my email address on the initial application and somehow that didn’t get updated at Housing.

I called Housing and got DS1’s email added. Odd.

**BTW…heads up for next year… **

Bama has the oddest way for returning students to get housing. It’s this weird 3 step process that can’t be done at one time.

The first year, I almost messed up because I did the first step and thought that was it. Luckily, DS1 noticed this email stating that Part 2 was due “that day” or else he wouldn’t get housing the following year. I about freaked at the thought that we came thisclose to not having housing for DS1’s sophomore year.

I don’t know why they do this 3 step process. First you indicate you’re returning. Then a few weeks later, you get to do the second step and pay a deposit. Then (I think) the third step is choosing the room for next year.

The rationale for the 3 step recontacting process is that first, housing needs to gauge demand from current students to see if all those interested can be accommodated (this is usually possible), then students have the opportunity to stay in their current space or move to a new building. If they choose the latter, there is a staggered selection process based on the ambiguous terms of freshman, sophomore, and junior. It’s a pet peeve of mine that they don’t just say you need X amount of credits to get a certain selection date.

I can understand a 2 step process, but I should be able to pay the app fee at the first step and then do the room selection later.

When we had this issue in Winter of '98, Bama didn’t even mention that it was a 3 step process, so new parents had no idea. UA now clearly mentions that it is a 3 step process. I’m sure they had some upset parents who didn’t realize that there was this middle 2nd step and missed the deadline.

Yes, it’s a good thing that UA now specifies that it’s a 3 step process. As I stated before, UA does not guarantee housing for returning students. If too many people completed the first step saying they still wanted on campus housing, UA would have to deny some of their requests and put them on a waiting list. The housing deposit guarantees a spot in housing, so UA cannot take deposits from people and then say sorry, you don’t get a place to live. In a similar way, UA reserves the right to consolidate housing assignments so that more suites could be all freshman.
According to Housing, the priority list for housing is incoming freshmen, current students living in on campus housing, then new transfer students, and finally current students who were living off campus, including those that were in Greek housing. I believe that last fall, UA was able to accommodate almost everybody who wanted on campus housing.

Son just got his email about housing. He starts on March 23, for honors housing. Is there an earlier start date? Hoping honors housing will still be available if he’s at a later date. We applied and put in deposits pretty early, but I’m sure others beat us to the punch. Glad it’s in March, though. We’re going to try to get back to campus during Mardi Gras to see the engineering buildings and tour Riverside and Lakeside, so he can make a choice of locations.

I wouldn’t worry. There are a lot of honors buildings. This last year, there were extra rooms.

Is your son going to room with his best friend? If you need another non-smoker, I know of one. Nice, smart kid.

If I don’t pay the deposit until April, will honors housing still be available?

Honors housing should still be available, but there are no guarantees. If you do wait until April, remember to accept your scholarship or have them extend that requirement to May 1. That info should be coming in a letter in February/March.

Yeah, I really can’t afford to pay a nonrefundable $200 without knowing my scholarship status. I wish they would send that information sooner than mid-March…

does anyone else feel a bit pressured by Bama to send deposits? I know I’m waiting until I get all my other offers(April 1st) before making a move

I think many schools that have housing selection dates determined by deposits, are pressuring kids to send their deposits in to get the earlier selection dates.

Don’t worry, many kids are like you; you’re all waiting to hear from your other schools. Don’t worry, if you come to Alabama, you’ll get housing. :)
