Housing for summer and fall 2010 is now available. In talking to someone in housing by phone, the $250 Fall 2010 deposit is non refundable (summer is $100 i think). My son's two college picks are UCF and UF. UF will not let prospective students know if they are admitted until mid February. If UF turns him down in mid February, and then he applies for housing at UCF, he probably won't get his first picks. Do we just suck it up and pay the $250, to guarantee the housing spot, and if he decides on UF, we kiss our money goodbye? What do you think? UF only asks $30 to secure a housing spot...I think $250 is a bit much.

Page 14 of the rental agreement states that there is a $100 cancellation fee if you cancel your contract in writing by May 1. In the past, this has meant that you only lose $100 of your $250 deposit. You should ask this question, specifically to the housing office.

Just pretty much what seiclan said. You dont get a full refund but when I talked to people from admission because I was in the same pickle last year (UF vs UCF), they did say that you will get $150 back. Last year though, I waited until after UF notified students to apply for housing at UCF. UF accepted me but I had to quickly decide which school I wanted to go to so for a few reasons I picked UCF, paid the housing deposit, and actually got my first choice. Not everyone will have the same luck though so I do advise that if UCF is a serious choice that you may wanna pay the housing deposit just in case.

just went thru this with UCF yesterday. If you notify them PRIOR to May 1, they do keep $100 of your $250. My daughter is also waiting to hear from UF…and if she does not get accepted, she will decide what she is doing as well. (UCF or other)
There’s not much you can do really. UF only asked for $25 (?) for their application fee to hold a “spot in line”…much more reasonable. JMHO, $250 is a lot and a $100 cancellation fee is a lot ;-( for a lot of us, but I guess its just the way it is.

My son is in the same boat.We decided to pay the 250.00( as well as 100.00 for the summer) I figure we are in a no lose situation. If he gets into UF we will gladly forfeit our deposit to UCF. If he does not get into UF he will be attending UCF ( which was his close 2nd choice) and he will most likely be assigned the room preference that he desires since he applied for housing so early

@gailbeth - yes - I was checking yesterday morning to see if the housing was up yet and it wasn’t, just happened to check again around noon or so, and it magically appeared, so I applied probably an hour or two later…
at least if my dd DOES actually go, she should def get / have first choice housing…

Thank you so much, seiclan, and others who replied. You guys are great. This is not what housing told me yesterday. Losing $100 is much better than losing $250! Everyone on this forum is great. Blessings to all this Thanksgiving!
