housing for a summer internship in Los Angeles

My son has a good possibility of receiving an 8 week+ internship for the summer of 2011. It will be in Santa Monica, CA. Housing, of course, is our principal concern. It's unlikely that he will be able to have a car, so we either need to find him something close by where walking or biking will be an option or something that's on an easy commute line (I don't know Los Angeles well, but I know that such a thing is rare). It looked to me as if there were some good possibilities for a public transportation commute between UCLA and Santa Monica. I was hoping that UCLA might rent out dorm rooms the was some DC colleges and universities do for summer interns, but I can't find anything on their site. Does anyone have any information about this possibility. I will call UCLA directly, but sometimes it helps to know exactly which office to ask for.

We would consider renting a car for him, but he will only be 21 and so that makes this option difficult if not impossible. At least that's my understanding. Also, it would be nice if he could avoid the headaches of driving and parking.

Does anyone have some advice or knowledge to share?

Our son found a room thru Craigs list. It was a house rented by college students and a few were away for the summer so they subletted the space to him.

The D of one of my friends rented a room in a frat house over the summer.

There are lots of summer sublets in the UCLA area. You can find housing online through the Community Housing link at UCLA. He would probably be sharing an apt with other students - but that should be fine, yes? And they’re usually furnished. I’m not saying they’re cheap - but if you’re used to paying dorm prices, it won’t be a shock. Buses are good between Santa Monica and UCLA. He should be able to manage.
That page also has links to other resources for finding housing.

The area right around UCLA (“Westwood”) has a lot of apartments that are largely rented to students. Most of these students will hang onto the apartment in the summers between years even if they will be off doing an internship elsewhere, back home for the summer, etc. That makes a lot of them available for sublet for the summer. There may also be a ‘gap’ in apt rentals for the complexes between when people were done in June and when the demand is heaviest which is September so it’s worth checking on that. The areas catering mostly to UCLA students is just to the southwest (Landfair, Strathmore, etc.) and south of UCLA (down to just south of Wilshire on either side of Westwood blvd. This is all walking distance to UCLA.

There’s a bus line that runs from UCLA to Santa Monica -

Living in the UCLA area is probably a good choice since you s/b able to find sublets and summer rentals more easily, it’s in a decent neighborhood (but so’s Santa Monica), it has a lot of other people around his age around, it has movie theaters (where many of the premiers are held), restaurants, etc., and he can maybe do some stuff on the UCLA campus as well.

If he does find a place in Santa Monica be advised that there’s a nice beach there, and it also has decent restaurants, shopping, etc. (3rd Street Promenade) -

My son’s fraternity rents out vacant rooms during the summer. Contact the UCLA housing office, they can probably put you in touch with other frats who do the same.

Notredamemom – not having a car is a GOOD thing in that area – parking is tough, and the Big Blue Bus has very frequent service that ought to take him where he wants to pretty quickly. Tons and tons of apartments between Wilshire and Santa Monica Blvd. (and for several blocks south of Santa Monica) from Sawtelle out to the high teens in Santa Monica (the city) are also worth looking at --especially if the internship would be around Sony/BMG on Colorado. If his internship is further to the west, could also check to see if there are housing roommate wanted boards near Santa Monica Community College, though I would think that housing close to the beach would get pretty pricey.

I’m pretty sure UCLA rents rooms to non UCLA students for the summer. THey are on the quarter system so their Summer won’t start until late June.

With no car, your son will need to find an apartment convenient to a bus stop (I echo the recommendation for the Big Blue Bus which is Santa Monica’s busline).

Oh and about the car, UCLA does offer Zipcar which is a service where you can rent a car by the hour or day. If his current school offers it to, I’d recommend he join.

Have you considered contacting the local Notre Dame alum club? It is possible that someone affiliated could help you out as well. Most of the alum clubs are pretty active in major metro cities and have strong roots. Members might be able to steer you towards assistance.

PS-I assume from your screen name that your child is a ND student.

There’s a good possibility that other interns will be local enough to bring their cars to the internship. So he may have access to rides. This worked out for my D when she had an internship in Atlanta one summer.

Hi Notre Dame Mom,

My son, who goes to Wake Forest, has an internship in Culver City from June 13 -Aug. 5th this summer. He was going to live with his 62 yr. old great uncle in Redondo Beach (we are from CT) but would prefer to room with someone his own age and nearer to Westwood. Would your son be interested in sharing or trying to find two rooms in a frat at UCLA with him?

My son has a great house north of USC that he shares with a bunch of kids whose moms are also on CC. They are hoping to rent out space this summer, so feel free to pm me if the Westwood options don’t work out. They are vacating mid-May, and return mid-August.

What a great board this is.

Hi,
My son is 20 years old and has been offered an internship at Rainbow Media in Santa Monica, we are looking to sublet or rent for the summer. Would you be interested in renting to him? He starts on May 24 and ends mid August. I can fly him out before so your son can meet him. He is currently a student in Phoenix AZ and lives at home.
Thank you,
Adrianne Burnell

LA without a car is a very difficult place, especially for a young adult. I encourage you to allow your son to rent a car for the summer. My intuition is that he’ll hate the place without having the mobility that a car provides.

It’s difficult for college age students to rent cars. Many rental companies have minimum age requirements, or huge surcharges.

Not an impossible drive from Phoenix - lend him a car.

Phoenix boy does have a car, just doesn’t have a place to live yet:) Any help?

^^ I just sent you a pm :)
