housing for a UK TRANSFER STUDENT-HELP

hi,im a transfer student from the UK.and just found out i got till fridaty to choose my housing ahhhh!!! Could some one give me some advice on where to live. I want to have my own room,be able to emmerse myself in the uni culture, but not round to many freshers coz im going into my 3rd yr,so gonna have to study pretty hard. I was thinking gooch/dillard,or maybe faulkner but i hear that is far away. Also i wanna stay in a relatively newish place, but theres no pics provided of the interiors.

help please ;-(

If you're going to be using a dining hall, then go with Gooch/Dillard. It's kind of far from central Grounds, but it's still within walking distance and there is a bus stop in front of it. Faulkner is not within walking distance from central Grounds.

Gooch/Dillard has air conditioning. Housekeeping will clean the bathroom and provide toilet paper. The rooms are singles, but they are very small. It's still worth it if a single is important to you.

If you decided to go with Gooch/Dillard, hope you don't get stuck at the top of the building because you'll be climbing many, many stairs and it gets tiresome. You should realize that Gooch isn't very social either (or at least it wasn't when I lived there). There won't be many open doors or people hanging out in the lounges.

emyyma, try to look at Lambeth, too. It's a bit more social and better located, in my opinion.

On a side note, you're transferring from the UK? What university did you go to previously? Are you an american citizen? Why are you transferring?

im from nottingham university,im 19 and just looking 4 a change in mt 3rd yr coz engineering can get a bit tedious. i dont wanna share rooms, has lambeth got single rooms, and what about brown.
thanks

If you want to get a single, your best bet is probably Hereford College. Unfortunately, Hereford is the farthest from Central Grounds.

Here are some UVA links that might help you. If you click on the pictures in this link, they give you info. for that particular dorm area:
http://www.virginia.edu/housing/transfer.php

Here are the housing rates for the dorms.
http://www.virginia.edu/housing/compare.php?type=transfer

I checked HoosHasIt, and there are some people who want to change their living situation and have potential dorm rooms/apts available.
http://uva.hoohasit.com/housing.php

oh ok thanks a lot,i was wondering if anyone knew if faulkner was any good,is it further then hereford?i think i have narrowed it down to dillard, faulkner, brown or lambeth, well if u call that narrowing down ;-)

Ahhh...here you go. It took me a while to find it. Here's the link that gives you a virtual tour of the dorms. Unfortunately, it only shows the interiors of the First Year dorms and Brown.

Here are webmaps of UVa. They will give you an idea where everything is. Since you're in Engineering, most of your classes will be around Thornton Hall. It's on McCormick Road. Now that I look at the map, Lambeth and Copeley might be the furthest for you. The closest would be Brown College. Bice is not too far, and relatively speaking Gooch/Dillard and even Hereford is not too bad though they're still on the outskirts of Grounds. (By the way, Bice is listed as Brandon Ave. in the link above and is listed as Bice in the link below.)
