Housing for Fall 2012 Semester

I am still waiting back from UF on my acceptance into UF but worry about housing will be full by the time they approve. I like these three options below due to having refrigerators in them. Can someone update me periodically on availability for these options below?

Which housing below is the best for older students 21 and over and much quite with less or no parties?

Option 1: Beaty Towers
Option 2: Keys
Option 3: Lakeside

I would be consider as a undergraduate transfer student.

They’re all full.

@heybails are you sure about Keys? I haven’t heard much people talking about it so I was hoping it didn’t fill easily. I really had my eye on that but I haven’t heard anything yet so I obviously can’t register.

If they are all full will be a bummer. It is going to be hard to decide on housing and where to stay. Any recommendations?

Unless they have a separate list of open housing for transfers, yes, they’re full. If you have to choose from the same list that incoming freshmen choose from then there is one spot in Lakeside for a male and none in the others on your list. However, I cannot see Keys.

But, I’m guessing they have separate housing…hopefully!

Alright…

First, Here are the basics on how to sign up for campus housing at the University of Florida:

  1. Apply
Submit a housing application and $25 non-refundable fee as soon as possible. We use your Housing Application Date to put you in line to select your room later. Apply as soon as you’ve applied to UF – do not wait until you’re accepted to UF.
*An application is not a guarantee that you will be offered housing if admitted to UF.
  2. Contract
Submit your contract and $200 pre-rent payment by your due date to guarantee a housing space. If under 18, parents MUST sign Residence Hall Contract(s).
  3. Room Sign Up
You can also choose a roommate based on room availability. A room will be manually assigned if availability becomes limited or you choose not to select a room.
  4. Pay your Rent
Rent is due in full prior to the beginning of each semester. You must apply for a housing deferment to use financial aid funds towards your billed rent.
  5. Move In

I think you can still apply, but you may be placed on a waitlist to offer housing if spaces become available.

So, if you apply now and get housing - you will probably not have a wide choice of housing (because it’s super late). With that being said, I highly recommend living on campus for your first year. It is so much easier to make friends, meet people, and get used to UF. Yes, the buildings are older, and you might have to share a bathroom. But - this is the true college experience. You can only do this once in your life (there aren’t typically old people in the halls - just other students doing the same stuff you’re doing), so I say go for it asap.

if you’re applying this late, I wouldn’t worry about preferences - just try to get on campus. I found it was a lot more expensive to live off campus, personally. Be careful with all of the additional costs with living off campus when comparing prices (first month’s rent, last month’s rent, security deposit, cost to turn water on, cost to turn electricity on, cost to turn cable on, cost to turn internet on, starting garbage services costs, monthly electricity, monthly water, monthly garbage disposal, monthly cable/internet, furniture, and having a lease that goes over the summer months too, transportation to get to classes, etc.). It was all those additional costs that hit me hard when I moved off campus.

The university has a Department of Off Campus Life that can help. Check out [University of Florida Off Campus Life](http://www.offcampus.ufl.edu/). They will be the BEST resource to give advice on places to live, how to negotiate leases, etc. And they’re UF!

Hopefully this answers everything. Seriously check out UFHousing on FB - they answer all of this stuff (including current availability). [UF Housing and Residence Education | Facebook](UF Housing)

I don’t think they post Keys because it’s for upperclassmen only.

This was very helpful and detail which I will go ahead and get the process started. I appreciate your breakdown and compliments above. Thank you!

@JorgaUF I completed step one above on the apply which say it takes two to three business days to process. Do I wait now and see what is available before doing the contract?

WOW it was hard to find a room, but I ended up in Buckman. I see its one of, if not, the oldest buildings on campus. That said its so close to food service, gym, class rooms, etc., etc. I’ve seen a few old threads that discuss the condition of the dorm. Is it really that bad? Can any Buckman residents chime in? I’m really looking forward to campus life as a freshman.
