Housing for Freshman

We have sent in the deposit for D to attend FIT in the fall majoring in Advertising/Marketing Comm. She has looked at the dorms and likes Alumni the best. Is it difficult for a freshman to get in there? She will probably only live in the dorms for a year since her sister is also in college in NYC and they plan to get an apartment together next year. D is coming from California.

Also, once the deposit has been sent does anyone know how long until this shows up in her FIT account so we can apply for housing? Thanks.

She can still have a chance to get Alumni and you should hear back from housing within a week or so.

Has anyone who submitted their tuition deposit been able to get in and select housing yet?

Not yet. They say it takes 3-5 days for your MyFIT to change from “Applicant” to “Student”, and I’ve read it takes about a day for the housing application to become available on your account. I sent my tuition deposit on Monday, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to apply by the weekend.

DeeYoo - Thanks. I will check my D’s account tonight since she is actually on spring break in NYC visiting D1. Hopefully I can get her housing in this weekend too!

I was able to get in today to my D’s account and put in her housing application. They only let you have one choice of where you want to live. There are no 2nd or 3rd choices. D’s first choice was Alumni in a two bedroom/quad so that’s what I put in for her. Now we have to wait and see what she gets!

Showmom, my daughter is a freshman at FIT, currently living in Alumni Hall so I may be able to answer some of your questions. I remember there was quite a bit of time that elapsed between when she submitted her housing application and when she was notified of her actual assignment. Her number one choice was Alumni as well. She had also submitted roommate requests, as did her roommates (they all met on the FB page for admitted students that one of her roommates actually created.) They all received the dorm they requested, so I don’t think you will have a problem if you already have her application in.

Alumni was a very nice dorm and worked out well for my daughter as she, and her roommates cooked many of their meals. I had only put $700 on her declining balance card in september and she still has some left, so that shows how little she uses the cafeteria. They have their own bathroom, but with that comes the responsibility of having to clean it, lol, they’ll quickly find out who likes a clean shower (usually the one doing the cleaning!)

After freshman year, they will move to the dorms of Kaufman Hall, which is a few blocks away. I haven’t seen the rooms yet, but my daughter said they are quite nice. Like you, I also had the option of daughter #2 living next year with daughter #1, who has an apartment in the city… but she wants to dorm one more year at school, to be closer to school and friends and her job on campus. We’ll see what happens after that.

If you have any other questions, I would be glad to share our experiences. My daughter absolutely loves it at FIT, and is so happy she chose it over other schools.

k1k2k3 - thanks so much for the information. What is your D’s major at FIT? Do you know if many others come from the west coast to FIT? My D will be majoring in advertising communications. She is not a designer, but has incredible fashion sense and hopes to eventually do styling of some kind along with writing for fashion. She would love to have a roommate that is a design major.

My D is also a vegetarian so she was not thrilled about having a big meal plan and instead prefers to do some cooking herself. She knows that in a suite she will have to keep the bathroom and kitchen clean.

My older D is at Marymount Manhattan majoring in musical theatre and lives in apartment on the upper westside. Both girls would actually like to live in the West Village area when they share an apartment. D2 may be like your D and decide to stay on campus for the second year.

You said your D has an on campus job. Is it easy to get a job on campus or do these all go to work study students?

I’m not sure of the number of students from the west coast, but there are kids from all over the country, as well as many from outside of the U.S. It’s quite an eclectic atmosphere at FIT. Facebook is probably the best place to find particular students (i.e. from the west coast), not sure if there was an admitted students FB group started for next year, if not, your daughter should consider starting one, it was quite helpful.

My daughter was awarded work study, after which she filled out appropriate paperwork and attended some mandatory meetings at the beginning of september. Following that, there was an online portal she had access to for on campus jobs. She had to apply/interview. She works in the print lab 10 hours/week and really likes it. She is a communication design major (will decide after 2 years whether she wants graphic or advertising design). Her print lab job is in line with her major as she get exposure to printing techniques as well as the work of both advanced students and faculty members, who use the lab to print their portfolio work.

It seems we have alot in common, my older daughter just finished her B.M degree in vocal performance (also with a love of musical theater, song writing, etc.). She just recently moved to the lower east side (by china town) with a couple of friends, one of whom goes to NYU. It would be nice if eventually her and my daughter at FIT could live together in NY. I have a third daughter, but she wants nothing to do with NYC, lol.

k1k2k3 - thanks for the info on your D’s job. My D does not qualify for any financial aid so she will not get work study. She was hoping to get a job on campus, but this probably will not work for her. She may be able to find something close to campus she can work a few hours each week.

I will ask D if she has looked at the fb groups for FIT to find out more info and maybe even see about roommates.

It does sound like our girls have a lot in common! Is your older D now working in the city and auditioning? My oldest D hopes to graduate next spring (after 3 years) and find some kind of survival job and start auditioning as much as possible.
