When do we EDs get housing forms? I thought we got first dibs on housing. Does anyone know which dorms to go for? Keeney Quad is looking good. Let me know.

Uh, I'm pretty sure we don't get to pick where we live

Sorry but you guys don't have a choice :(. Even as sophomores you often get crappy rooms.

my friend gave me the impression that there is pretty much a freshman dorm and a sophomore dormitory. From what I saw the sophomore one was nice. I suppose you can't ever hope for too much...

also.. perhaps someone could correct me on this... but i believe she also told me that for roommates you get like.. a 7 question survey or something and they try place you with someone that would.. help you learn more about the world? usually not someone with the same intended major..

Sorry, your friend told you wrong...

Here's the deal. About half of all freshmen live in Keeney Quad, a big dorm that your friend might've been saying was the "freshman dorm." However, a lot of the singles and some of the doubles in Keeney are occupied by upperclassmen, so it's not technically a freshman dorm.

Other places freshmen live include all-freshman dorms such as Littlefield Hall and Hope College, and other larger dorms that are mostly freshmen but also include some upperclassmen, such as Andrews Hall.

There is no one "sophomore dorm." There are a few dorms that are currently sophomore only (one tower of Grad Center, etc); however, a lot of that is in flux right now as the housing lottery changes. Sophomores live all over campus. Some get really nice housing, and some get screwed. It's a mixed bag.

And the roommate survey your friend told you about is not entirely accurate either. As I remember, the survey you fill out has nothing to do with your your major or personal interests. Basically all they ask you is whether you smoke, whether you can tolerate living with someone who smokes, whether you describe yourself as messy / neat, morning / evening, etc. They also ask whether you have any particular housing needs (handicapped, allergies, etc). Other than those things, they claim to do housing randomly, regardless of race, national origin, academic interests, etc. That said... I'm not sure if I've ever seen two international students or students of the same minority background placed together... don't know if that's just my limited experience or if there's something else to that.

i have a freshman friend who lives in emery, would you say that is out of the ordinary?

haha... seriously pwnage just occurred on here....

Haha... wasn't trying to put anybody down, just to set the facts straight. :)

Yup, lots of freshmen live in Emery-Woolley and Morriss-Champlin on Pembroke.

what freshman dorm has an active area around it? When I visited in October I stayed in perkins and the area around the dorm, obviously, was residential and quiet. I would imagine keeney is pretty lively, what about places like hope, littlefield, andrews?

I live in Hope this year....its once of the smallest dorms on campus....only about 70 people total, with the first floor (~15 people) being upperclassmen. That being said, its on the main green which is absolutely amazing. We're so close to everything, and the main green always has something going on (including the damn construction which has woken me up the last 5 nights at 8 in the morning.....ugh!) From my understanding Littlefield, which is pretty much on the main green as well, is very similar to Hope.

Perkins is unusual -- all of the other freshmen dorms are close to main parts of campus and actually have stuff going on.

There's always something going on in Keeney, which can be a good thing if you're in the mood to be social but a bad thing if you're in the mood to study.

Hope, Littlefield, and Wayland are the three small, all or mostly freshman dorms on or close to the main green. They're all pretty similar to what catsrus9 described -- a small, fun community, close to everything.

The big dorms on the Pembroke campus (Andrews, Morriss-Champlin, Emery-Woolley) are pretty social, too, and Pembroke is definitely a nice community.

Does anyone have pictures of the inside of the dorms? I went on a tour this summer and they didn't take us in one.

Wayland is on the frat quad, and one block from Keeney, so there's always something happening near there.

And even still, the campus isnt that large, it's like a 10 min walk from pembroke to the main green/wriston (the frat quad), and only like 15 from pembroke to perkins, which is the largest distance between frosh dorms.

Most people tend to like pembroke if theyve stayed there... I got assigned to New Pembroke 3 (arguably the worst dorm on campus) and i still love pembroke... The other dorms around here (Emery Wooley, Morris Champlin and Andrews are all pretty sweet)

really? Most of my pembroke friends tried to get as far away from pembroke as they could in the lottery.

Lol it varies i guess.. Im not staying on pembroke either, but thats only because me and my friends got lucky and got amazing suites in barbour..

I know quite a few people staying back.. Guess it varies from person to person... Had an amazing time on pembroke though... Gonna have to start eating at the ratty now...

throws up

Pembroke is a nice place to live if you're a freshman, mainly because there's a huge freshman community. However, I wouldn't live here as a sophomore because there aren't that many sophomores here with the exception of the singles in New Pembroke, and New Pembroke has a reputation in general of not being very social.
