Housing Issue

I'm an incoming freshman who wanted to have single room during the school year
How much more do you have to pay for a single room? (IMPORTANT: I'm poor)
How likely is it to get a single room?

Thanks

$3050 - double
$3263 - single
$4270 - super single
per semester
a super single is a double-size room

There are about 1/2 singles in the New Turman, if you applied to the ethics program or whatever it is.

Harris has a fair number of singles, but I'm not sure how many floors are going to be freshmen. It could be all, it could be only half the building like it is this year.

The rest of the freshmen dorms don't have singles.

Having a roommate is not that big of deal. you get used to it. It's way more fun and is a learning and growing experience. Having a roommate is great for your freshman year, especially when you know no one during your first few weeks.

www.housing.emory.edu is helpful.

If you don't get a single in New Turman, I would highly advise just taking a roommate. Nothing is worth living in Harris. Trust me.

People who wanted singles used to live in Turman West, but that is rightly being torn down.

Well if you are poor, why are you worried about getting a single room?

Jmbarr

Why is Harris so bad? Please elaborate because my son requested Harris (preferably a single).

Anyone else, PLEASE comment about Harris.

Thanks so much.

Harris is an old, poorly upkept building. The rooms in Harris are pretty small. In the past, Harris was not a particularly social hall; however, that could change if Harris becomes all freshman (which is what I think is happening).

Some students like Harris, some don't. Some freshman who like having a single find that the advantages of having a single in Harris far out-weigh the unsighty building. Other freshman, even though they are not in singles, do not mind Harris, either.

Personally, I would not want to live in Harris. I don't like the rooms or the inside of the building.

I personally don't think Harris is that bad. The rooms may be small, but this year Harris hosted the arts hall, which a lot of upperclassmen chose to join because Harris is so close to the Schwartz Center. Even if you're not musically inclined, the location has to be a plus (you can roll out of bed and be at class in the library three minutes later, literally).

harris is amazing its one of the newer buildings i lived there last year

i completely disagree with jmbarr. Harris, by far, had the biggest and nicest rooms of any freshmen hall last year. and it will be a completely freshmen hall this year also.

Harris was renovated in 1995 and looks very nice. I personally think it looks almost like a Choice Hotel from the inside. There are quite a few study spaces there too. I am a big fan of the proximity to the library...very nice for those late nights when you don't want to wait for an escort or walk for 10 minutes. Harris is also very close to Complex where there are exercise machines...if you don't want to go all the way to the WoodPEC. In addition, next year, just about the entire area around Harris will be all freshman, creating an amazing atmosphere.

Harris is going to be all freshman next year. Some will be getting the suites on the top floor (2 bedrooms, 4 people, 1 bathroom).

I'm kind of biased about Harris...I'll be living on the third floor next year.

In other news, McTyeire is going to be a sophomore dorm next year.

McTyeire is still freshmen. Trimble will be for Sophomores.

dgebll, we'll see about that ;)

mctyeire is still freshmen for next year. it wasn't an option for sophomore housing (on the application at least). if you're referring to the lack of housing for a bunch of the class of '10, i heard a day ago that some of them are being placed in the clairmont tower.

...i'm a reslife member; we have a conferece

McTyeire is going to be for sophomores due to the sophomore overflow...
...haven't heard about the overflow going into clairmont yet...

why the hell is emory dumping all the sophomores in the worst dorms? do they actually expect alumni donations from us after that? better yet, why are they knocking down buildings if there's an overflow? and why didn't they have this planned out months ago? they had our class size in may of 2006 and the space availability well before that. honestly, some of the most irrational decisions ive ever seen in my life have been made by this top 20 university.

while i do think it's lame to be in turman as a sophomore, i don't think we are being put in the worst dorms. McTyeire, Woodruff, Clifton, Turman S. i wouldn't call these the dump dorms. plus, giltom wasn't better than any of the above listed.

My theory:

Emory isn't so much giving all the sophomores the worst dorms as they are trying to get all of the freshman together. If all the freshman live together, and just as important, on main campus, they will be able to meet each other and create a community much more easily. I wish parts of my freshman class last year weren't thrown in the corner at Turman.

By trying to create a community for the freshman (the incoming students who are going to be very homesick and will need a strong sense of community, support, and other people going through the same feelings), Emory must spread out the sophomore class (we all know that no college would dare inconvenience their upperclassmen). Once enough buildings come up for freshman, a plan will come up for sophomores and a community building system. Remember that colleges are always changing and that some classes do get stuck in the transition stages. However, for the overall betterment of the college, I think they have the right idea. I am bitter that I will have a hard time seeing all of my friends together, but it will be better for future classes.

The planning for this, IMO, is just right. It wasn't so much about the size of 2010. It was more about the size of 2011. They wanted to make sure that all the freshman had a cluster. Now that they are pretty sure they know the numbers (not sure about how the waitlist is working out this year, but I'm sure that they must have a pretty good idea in housing...), they're able to move the sophomores who didn't have housing around.

^^Just my two cents.

BTW, McTyeire isn't bad at all. I just got out of there. It was very social...rooms were huge! Bathrooms could use some improvement, but overall, I think McTyeire has the largest rooms on campus.

lol..

IMO, that is a bit of an understatement. I wonder if there are some prisoners with cleaner bathrooms than those in McTyeire. It wouldn't surprise me.

Yall complain too much. None of the dorms are nearly as bad as yall make them out to be. And Woodruff is way overrated. I would rather live in McTyeire/Trimble in the middle of campus than over by the nursing school and have to walk 15 minutes to class in the rain. It's miserable.

Gil/Thom has to go because the Psychology Dept needs a new building badly. It's scattered in 5 or 6 buildings around campus. That will free up the old psyc building for other departments. Turman has to go to make room for the new Emory Clinic/Hospital buildings. Remember, the clinics are part of the University too. The world doesn't revolve around undergrads. We will be slightly inconvenienced for a couple of years in order to make Emory significantly better for future classes. Stop whining because you didn't get your first choice dorm. The world doesn't always work out the way you want it.

harris is actually one of the nicer dorms, and it will be entirely dedicated to freshmen this year. it's new, clean, and the cleaning staff is friendly and cooperative. plus, it has an elevator
