Threes'kid: we had Ruckster last year, but I don't think SU is re-upping the subscription. I never bothered with it, and nor did most students. Only a couple hundred signed up. A (national) news article recently addressed this trend, finding that most students just download illegally or buy from iTunes.

For all the time I spend on the internet, it would be an awful shame if I didnt have a facebook account :) I be Kaylen Thorpe

I find that emulators work so much better. Not only am I in control of what hardware is running (which is a lot better than any game system), but I can tweak all the external settings, and have better control over the game. This includes the controller - whenever I can I prefer to use a keyboard and mouse because, lets face it - first person shooters were NOT meant to be played with a joystick. Takes too damn long to memorize all the buttons on a controller, so I can just program them myself on my USB controller if theyre simple, or use the keyboard and mouse if its more difficult.

15" is very small. Flat screens are still very expensive - you can get a good ole CRT (tv-style) monitor for several hundred cheaper. I have a 19" one that only cost about $170. Okay, so it weighs 30 pounds - but I don't mind - it aint like I gotta carry it around much :-)

I guess for some people money isn't a problem, but I figure a larger viewable area is of more value than a fancy flat-screen. Plus, the technology is far from perfected - the light source behind the screen itself (the LCD displays the screen image, and the light behind it makes it more vibrant) burns out in a couple years (2-3 generally). They can be replaced, but the trip to the repair shop ain't cheap.

You can get a pretty good dell 19" lcd from a reseller for only 199

the only reason i wanna go for the flat screen is to save space. my room isnt big and i have alotta stuff.

kaylen is such a pretty name

see i also need a lightweigt tv. im coming from far away. shipping is expensive.

Melo don't buy it at home. Buy it online and do in-store pick-up, or find it at a store that's in SU and buy it there. Saves shipping.

I spent today going through Bed, Bath, and Beyond picking things and writing them down. My grandmother will get the list, and buy it in Buffalo. I'm driving to SU from Buffalo (I live in FL), so I can pick it up with all my bro's old stuff to take w/ me (he just graduated from Rochester). It's quite a system.

anarchy-

1) you said you write for the DO. im interested in writing for it next year, how do i get involved, and as a freshman, will i be doing petty tasks or will i be able to write articles, etc.

2) kind of random, but as for the dating/romance department @ su- is this a college full of random hookups (ok kind of an oxymoron, but there are some schools where this is not as common) or are there alot of ppl in more serious boyfriend/girlfriend relationships?

thanks!

3kids youre a genius. but then i guess i gotta make sure they have those stores in syracuse. ill check online for stores like hhgregg. they better have a best buy or ill cry silently for four years str8. and my mom is convinced that they dont have a wal-mart up there. (walmart is everywhere. walmart owns the world). i also gotta check for an ikea.

anarchy u kinda look like wes from the real world.

Syracuse2010: I dont write, I'm just the computer guy :-) The DO is distributed everywhere on campus, and there is a freshmen issue coming out on the 24th that has tons of info on what to do around town and stuff. We run regular ads inviting anybody at all who is interested, to stop by our office in the afternoons when the writing starts. The editors for the respective departments usually get in around 3:30 or 4pm, and the whole crew is there around 6pm. Its a chaotic operation until 12 or 12:30 when people start to go home for the night, but the Copy editors are around until 2 or 3am, and the chief editors and designers will be around until 4 or 5. Each night at 11pm everybody throws in a buck or two and they get some munchies - soda, chips, cookies, and whatever other random stuff they feel like getting. Couple people had a thing for queso, so there was an awful lot of that to be seen. Anyway, stop by any time in the afternoons - we are at 744 Ostrom Ave. If you want I can meet up w/ you some time and take you over to the office and show you around, introduce you to everybody. The people there are really cool, and smart too. A bit weird though (in the art student sort of way, but only marginally so).

You can be a regular staff member, working in a department of your choice - photography, design, comics, news, feature, sports...or you can be a contributing writer and just drop off stories when you find something of interest to you. There is no real bias against underclassmen, and you will be involved just as much as you choose.

As for relationships, its a mix of both. It isn't as hot and steamy as you might expect a college to be - syracuse is relatively moderate, considering its location and considering its reputation. The sorority girls though, you get a single beer in them and they act all slutty, as though they are drunk off their asses, and really easy. I think its just them faking it for some action. Theres plenty of sex, but like I said, its neither common nor rare.

melo: Wal-mart is in Dewitt, which is several miles east of Syracuse (5 or 6). I don't know if a bus goes out there either. Still, you can probably find one at a store close to campus, or post some fliers around campus (or in the DO) saying that you are looking to buy a TV.

As for me looking like Wes, well...I've never watched the show in my life, I have no clue what its about or who he is, and after 15 minutes of searching for a picture of him, well...he has a square head dont he? :p I was wondering how similar i could possibly look, considering that they would usually never let somebody as ugly looking as me on TV, unless it was for Ripleys or something :P

lol. youre not ugly! thanx for the walmart tip. lol @ searching for a pic of wes. he does have a square head.and u dont .that makes u cuter. i like your hair. can i touch it?

Anarchy, go easy on yourself, you're not ugly. And as for letting ugly people on TV, well, turn on Everybody Loves Raymond.

Melo, are you driving up? Renting a car when you get there?

idk talie. i think we are gonna rent a car for driving around and buying things. how much does it cost? do u kno? and i think im flying and sgipping most of my stuff

We're trying to find good rates for a minivan- dodge has stow-and-go so that'd be great, but we can't find anything under $100 a day- which isn't good.

Wow, it's weird to see my real name on here (actually Talie is a nickname, but no one calls me my real name). Melo, I hope you know that no matter how well I get to know you away from this website, you will always be Melo to me.

omg $100/day?! wow. well its just me and my mom so maybe we just need a nice 4 door and we can put my stuff in the backseat.

lol. u can call me melo. but i cant walk around callin u 3kids. plus i really like the name talie. what is it a nickname for? natalie? natalia?

have u got in touch with your roomate yet? i finally got in touch with mine. her name is (lol) natalie and shes polish. shes in poland right now. she seems really cool tho. and she finally got a facebook.

Yep, the real name's Natalie. Most people go ages without knowing that about me. I hope people catch on to the nickname quickly at SU. I really won't know who they're talking to if they call me Natalie...or, oh G-d, Nat. Gross.

Ya I talked to the roomie. She seems pretty nice. She's constantly out of town though, so we prob won't really talk til we move in.

melo- this has nothing to do w/ anything, but I realized that u asked the difference between private and prep schools and I totally misunderstood. Anyway, private could be private for any reason (they want to teach their own way, they want a religious affiliation, w/e). Prep schools are just schools aimed toward college- they're college preparatory schools. Mine is a religious (episcopalian)prep school, so it's a little of each. Posting it here in case anyone's interested.

ew nat is pretty wierd. nat turner. nat king cole. so what happens if youre in a college prep school and u dont go to college? are u hanged?

Actually they lie and say u went to community college. This year was really weird. 2 kids didn't get in anywhere they applied and opted for community college near their school of choice. One just decided to go backpacking rather than go to college. It's pretty frowned upon.

wow thats so interesting. its totally opposite for our school. the more kids we have goin to college the better. this year was actually our best year and not even half of our class went to college.

my roomate's a sophomore (how did that happen?)... should be good times.

really?! lol! thats perfect.
