I got in for Criminology this month, and I need to apply for housing ASAP! I read that the College of Criminology is basically Hecht House, so I figured that it'd be best to live in a dorm nearby. Which dorms are closest to Hecht? Any dorms I should avoid? I'm really not too picky about dorms, and I don't care what type of bathroom I get. Distance is important though.

Hecht House is on the east side and you should also pick an east-side dorm. You have mentioned you haven’t applied for housing, so you may get one of the less requested dorms. Degraff, Broward, and Bryan are reasonably close to the Hecht House, about a 2 minute walk.

You won’t be discriminated if you are gay. In fact us straight men may hook you up with another gay guy if we happen to know any.

My daughter is also a criminology major. The Hecht House (actually an former sorority house) is mostly faculty and administrative offices. You will not be taking any classes at the Hecht House, just meeting your advisor or faculty office hours. The criminology classes my daughter is taking are located on the east side. So any of the east side dorms would probably be convenient to your classes.

Wait, you just got accepted for Criminology for Spring? The campus is supposedly shut down until January 2nd- and has been since December 23rd.
I know that FSU Housing is closed down until 8am January 2nd. Which means that you won’t be placed until then- the day everything opens back up for move in- if you’re lucky.

As for what you get for Housing, I’ve got pretty bad news. This late in the game, you aren’t going to get your choice (if there are even openings). You’re going to get what is open, and it might not be your first choice- or even on that side of campus.

Now that all the doom and gloom is over, there’s some good news. FSU is very gay-friendly. The Pride Student Union is very active with events, and the drag show is one of the most popular events held in Club DownUnder- in fact, there’s a drag show being held January 6.

Ah, there are no crim classes in the Hecht house really. There actually all over the place. I’ve had some in Bellemey and also some in diffenbaugh also some in wjb building. So making that assumption is bad. Also there is no housing right by the hecht house I mean there are a couple dorms but being a transfer you probably dont want to stay over there

Thanks for the advice y’all! I’ll be sure to look for some east-side dorms then. In the event that I don’t get a dorm on the east-side of the university, will the walk to my classes be terrible?

Pasbal, I got accepted for Criminology as a fall 2012 freshman.

Good to know that FSU is gay friendly! The drag show sounds like a lot of fun.

Oh okay, for a while there I was confused as could be. I thought it was a bit odd that they had accepted anyone this late, considering there’s less than a week till Spring semester starts. Congratulations on being accepted for Fall 2012 then!

The FSU campus is actually rather small for such a large university- which certainly has its pluses (nearly everything on campus is just a short walk away) and its drawbacks (there’s a distinct lack of parking, and unfortunately, room for expansion is quickly getting limited).

If you get an east side dorm, the walk to the other edge of campus is only about 20 minutes or so. I live in McCollum on the west side of campus, and any time I go to class in the Bellamy building or HCB near the student union, it takes about 10 minutes to get there, and that includes usually waiting to cross the two roads in between. I do however walk relatively fast, so it might be about 15 minutes for someone who walks slower.

I just looked where the Criminology classes were being held next semester, and they’re spread across much of the east side of campus- the Bellamy building, HCB, Diffenbaugh, Sandels, and the Conradi building. If you apply for an east side dorm, you’ll be within maybe 10 minutes walking of any of those buildings HCB and Diffenbaugh being the furthest).

I actually had to go to the Longmire building the other day and walked past the Hecht House. It’s actually really low-key; had it not been mentioned here and I saw the sign indicating what the building was, I honestly wouldn’t have recognized it as being important on campus.

If you go the [FSU Campus Map](http://map.campus.fsu.edu/index.aspx), you can zoom in a bit toward the Convocation Way/Call Street intersection and see the location of Hecht House, in comparison to the east-side dorms. You can also get an idea of where the different buildings that your Criminology classes will be held in compared to some of the dorms.

If your housing priority number is too high for you to feel safe about getting into one of the dorms you’re interested in, you might want to look into [the LLCs that are housed in the east-side dorms](http://housing.fsu.edu/livlearnsteps.html). While I can’t say for sure what priority number would be the cutoff, I would say that if yours is above 2000 or so, you might look into one of them to help get an east-side dorm. Being accepted into an LLC also guarantees you a spot in the dorm they are located in.

Corbis- Thanks for the kind words! Honestly though I still am learning about the campus myself. I actually have learned a lot from here- probably just as much, if not more than, what I have learned by being on campus. :)

FSU is really gay-friendly. I’m active in the LGBT community, PRIDE is huge here. We have a safe-zone in the Student Union which is open all day on weekdays. If you visit campus, come visit us and we’ll show you around and you can make some friends before you get here next year! =) There are always events going on in the center. I’m there almost every day between classes just to hang out and study instead of going all the way back to my dorm ^_^
