Ross has merit scholarships too. But you don’t find out you’ve gotten it until the summer before you start Ross.
… and Illinois, Wisconsin, UDub, Texas, Penn State, Georgia Tech, the rest of the UCs, etc.
Michigan is working to meet needs for OOS … and I think that’s the right direction.
@GloBlue81 unfortunately uc berkeley and ucla are cutting out of state financial aid because of their financial problems so do you think their prestige will go down in the future? also umich is considered one of the top 2 public universities in the united states. the other schools you mentioned are not as academically prestigious as umich so they have to use merit aid to attract students who otherwise would have chosen umich or an equivalent school. I think its impressive that umich is slowly improving financial aid for their extremely high out of state population (44%) while able to keep in state tuition low. I don’t think any other public universities can survive as 50% out of state while providing good aid to out of state students.
As far as I know, the schools I mentioned in my post do not offer much merit grants for OOS. Chancellor Blank. for example, proposed to double Wisconsin’s merit aids to keep pace with her Big Ten peers like Ohio, Iowa, and Michigan. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/12/18/university-wisconsin-ups-its-merit-aid-effort-better-compete-peers
As far as I know, Cal and UCLA didn’t offer much OOS financial aids to start with. I understand the Regents plan to “phase out” need-based aids for OOS too?
@GoBlue81 The UCs have already eliminated need-based financial aid for OOS students. They are now only eligible for federal student aid. And yes, this is worrying university administrators. They are afraid that it will damage their national standing and also the overall qualify of their student bodies. Cal and UCLA have started raising money for non-state funding financial aid but the reality is that UC is now not a viable option for those OOS students need substantial financial aid.
There are also co-op houses at UM that are reasonable in price and filled with students looking for a cheaper price than dorms or Greek life. I lived in central campus dorms, co-ops, and North campus apartment at Northwood at various points and never had access to a car. It was all fine, even the bus. Also sublet an apartment over one summer, but the co-ops were more convenient. I didn’t try to stay in dorms bit everyone else who did seemed able to.
Hi all,
Just to conclude my initial query about housing at UM. My D has decided on another school. Maybe something will change in the future, but for now she is very excited about her choice. Thank you all for your comments.
Best wishes to your D!
@Razzyreb where is she going? Good luck!
Hi, I’m also a very concerned parent with a daughter starting classes as a transfer student ( not a freshman) at the UofM this August. She is loosing many sleepless nights over not being able to find affordable housing. She is 30 years old which makes it less desirable to room with 20 year olds and she will be living off her GI Bill (hence the tight budget ) . The areas she may be able to afford are in areas reporting an incredible incidence of crime ( outside of the school parameter. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised studio apartments seem to be gauging these young people.
She did reach out via Skype to several potentials to see about rooming with them and one man looked like he had a pit dug out already (want to play a game, Clarise ?) lol and the others love to party and get drunk… She went to all this trouble to get accepted into their dental program and looks like a tent might only be left (we checked the nearest campground and it wasn’t too close ) hope your daughter fairs better…
^^oh boy. That is tough. Are there any apartments left at Northwood? It is relatively quiet with families and grad students and university run. I lived there as a grad student with all classes on central campus and the bus worked great for me. I’ve got to say there isn’t anywhere in AA proper that I wouldn’t live. Can the dental school help with housing options? Sometimes the program esp. the professional ones work with students to help match them up for housing. Or perhaps on the medical campus? Also served by bus and full of hard working nursing students and residents.
I just looked and it seems like there are some singles available in the North campus co-op http://icc.sitemanager.rentmanager.com/2017-18AvailabilityandCost.aspx
If the link won’t post, Google ICC Ann Arbor. I’m not familiar with the North campus co-op but I did reside in central campus co-ops for several years. Much cheaper than dorms or apartments way back when. It is student run. I was a fan.
What is her budget and has she looked near north campus? Many complexes are older and cheaper than those near central. My D lives in Highlands and it is well-managed. A single is still over $1000/mo though. My D has roommates.
$1,000 each, right? How does that compare to the dorms?
@umsigmadom - Where my D lives it’s just over $1000 total for a 1B. My D is in a 2B and splits the rent with two others. Her share is about $450. Dorms are about $12-14k/year, but that’s room AND board.
@Djslp64 Have she contacted the housing office and inquired about the Northwood apartments? They are within the North campus and is more affordable that the apartments nearby.
@Djslp64 I send you a PM
@dentmom4 would you please send me a PM about Northwood also? My son is a transfer too (sophomore) and has no idea where he’s living in the Fall.
@umsigmadom Did he apply for a dorm also? For Northwood3, check out the link below:

Hello! My son is transferring to UofM this fall. As of now, he is still looking for housing. He wants very much to be in campus housing. He is monitoring the housing contract reassignment postings and we are hoping that something will come up. Assuming he can get a housing contact, we are wondering if those with reassigned contracts are allowed to swap rooms (to try and get closer to where his classes will be). Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated.
