So I'm going to go on a tour of UCSC next week and I'm really excited. It's become my #1 choice school because I want to major in Linguistics. I've been pouring over the threads on housing here and I would like to get an opinion.

I don't want to be around partiers or stoners, but also not around people that think studying is the most important thing. I don't drink or smoke, but I'm pretty liberal. I'm not religious at all and I don't want to be living in a cinder block dorm. I don't have a problem with preps as long as they're not ditzy.

I also cannot live in a small little room with another person. When I visited UCSD at Spring Break, I flipped at how tiny the rooms are. Do any of the colleges have bigger rooms? I wouldn't mind sharing a room as long as it wasn't super small.

What are some of the stereotypes of the colleges? Right now I'm leaning toward Kresge.

You might want to loosen up a little. Freshman college living is largely about learning to deal w/ less than ideal living situations (like tiny rooms) as well as people who are different than you.

It’s great that you don’t party but if you attend just about anywhere other than Bob Jones University or BYU you ARE going to be living with partiers in your dorm. Some of them will be really nice people so give them a chance. It’s not like high school where the serious partiers are not neccessarily the brightest bulbs. It’s a UC and at a UC you have CA’s top students.

Oakes also has apt style living for frosh.

Good luck! One of my favorite classes of all time was a linguistics class at UCSC

To save a few dollars, I signed up my (ocd) daughter for a triple in College Eight. She’s freaking out a bit at the thought of having to share a bathroom and room with strangers who might not meet her standards of cleanliness. Any advice to help her keep her sanity? Or, if she can’t hack it, can she switch to a double?
Next, what essentials (not on the list) did you find most useful to bring with you to the dorm? We don’t want to overpack but don’t want to underpack either. Thanks!

If she is a freshman in a triple at college 8, they entire floor shares a large communal bathroom (either coed or single gender depending on the floor layout).

It is weird for a few days considering you are sharing a bathroom with a girl, or in her case a boy. Students get used to it though and no one seems to have any problems.

The bathrooms are cleaned pretty regularly so it never gets disastrous.

College 8 has slightly (and I mean only slightly), larger rooms than some of the other dorms. Also, there are some suites at the ends of each hall which have a separate sitting area and a shared bathroom which might make it seem larger. You can request one of the suites as your first choice, whether you get it or not, well, thats up to chance. Porter will have brand new dorms. They were essentially torn down to the metal outer structure and rebuilt to new siesmic standards. It’s always nice to live in a new dorm, but a double will only be about 200 sq ft or something like that. Porter B will be ready for fall 09 and Porter A will be ready for fall 10.

Anyone have a clue as to how decent the Porter apartments are? I’m with Stevenson college, but they were out of apartments so I ended up at a Porter apartment.

Nice to see another Ling major! We just learned at orientation that the Syntax 1 class is a death sentence! And that was from the mouth of a faculty member.

The Porter apartments are nearly identical in layout to the Cowell apartments. They’re fairly big and very new. They’re certainly pretty nice. Not to worry.

I lived in the Porter apartments for a year. It’s two doubles, two singles, two bathrooms, kitchen, living room, and a bunch of random closets. Lots of space, high ceilings, big windows, and still fairly new. As long as you get along with your housemates, it’s great!

KewkieKid: Im moving into the Porter Apartments in September, but they don’t really make it too clear as to what they come with. Entertainment center? Kitchen table? chairs? How many?
