I currently live off-campus, but am trying to live on-campus next year. The housing department tells me the only way I can get back on campus for Fall is to move on campus for this Spring. This is impossible for me, however, because I still have a lease, and do not wish to pay around 3K for a room I'm not going to use. Is the housing department really this unreasonable? and does anyone have any experience with this?

Yes, they are that unreasonable. My daughter was in the same situation last year. The housing department said she'd have practically no chance of getting a room on campus as a sophomore if she didn't take a room the second semester freshman year. We complained, made lots of calls, etc. We ended up paying for a dorm room AND the remaining months of her lease. We felt like chumps, but really wanted her on campus. Good luck. I hope you find a less expensive way to get on campus.

Why not try to lease out your apartment for spring? There may be many people who are anxious to get out of the dorms early. Check your lease contract and see if you are able to do that.
