Housing Question

When should I apply for housing? I got in to Penn State like 4 days ago, but I have never visited. Nonetheless I am still 90% percent sure I'm gonna go to Penn State. So should I apply for housing now or should I apply at the end of January after I visit Penn State? If I delay applying for housing until late January or early February will this affect my chances of getting first choice housing?

congrats on getting into PSU!!!

do u have to put a down payment inorder to apply for housing? im not to sure, bc if you do i would advice you to wait till you visit, because you never know, personally i would wait

but of course the longer you wait the least likely you get your first choice housing, but most freshman end up in the East halls anyway..

You have to pay $300 in deposits (three separate $100 deposits and only $100 of that was the housing deposit) to get the housing contract. The three deposits are not refundable.

There is another thread about best freshman dorms at UP which has a good discussion on your question and many others - http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/penn-state-university-park/596605-what-considered-best-freshman-dorms-up.html?highlight=housing

It made us go ahead and pay the deposits should my daughter choose to attend. PSU UP is in her top two choices so chances are great that she will attend.

I would do the housing as soon as you know penn state is where you want to go because if you wait too long, you will be put in supplimental. (which is basically one big room with 4-8 people, depending on how big the room is) trust me, you dont want supplimental, but don't worry you still have time to decide.

If you are adamant about living in a specific area of Penn State your freshmen year that is not a SLO (general housing) than I would submit your contract by Feb. If you don't really care where you live, as long as its not Supp. housing, then submit by late March. If you wait until April, its then you run the risk of getting stuck in Supp housing.

Eh I know some kids living in supplemental housing, and they don't mind it too much. Plus, they move kids out of it as the semester goes on, so you can end up with a lot of space.

I'm a bit confused about how housing is assigned. Are rooms assigned based on the date acceptance fees are submitted or on the date housing contracts are submitted? E-living seems to make a distinction, suggesting it is the latter, but it isn't 100% clear.

its when you submit your housing contract.

^^It's the latter.
