Housing ?s

I've read a number of threads on housing, and I have a few questions:

Any information about the CSE house in Frontier is welcome. In particular, is the social life on par with the rest of the hall? How bad is the gender ratio?

As a backup to Frontier, I'm considering Territorial, Middlebrook, and Comstock. I'm social but not a huge drinker/partier, and I wouldn't consider myself artsy at all. I like the location of Comstock but have heard that it's not the best place for a freshman. As an OOSer, I wouldn't know many people going in. Your thoughts on these three?

Just to confirm: I can fill out the application without committing to attend (but with a $25 fee), and I can change my choices after submitting the application. Is that correct?

Thanks for any opinions.

1. The CSE house is definitely a good choice. It is super quiet so its good to study. Also the majority of the kids are taking the same classes, so there’s always someone to help out with homework problems or to study with.

As for the gender ratio, out of the 120ish rooms on the floor, about 12 are girls. Social life within the house will be whatever you make of it. Yes, there are the people who stay in and game every night, but the majority of people go out just like any other college kid.

2. If you don’t want to party much, don’t live in Territorial. You can walk down the halls and smell alcohol. And just because you don’t live there doesn’t mean you can’t go there if you ever do want to party.

Middlebrook is on west bank, and almost every CSE class is on east bank. so unless you take an elective or LE over there, it might be nice not to have to make the commute (it’s really not that bad though) otherwise, it is an artsy-er hall, because it is primarily the arts/honors housing.
Comstock does have the best location, but from what i’ve heard it’s “weird.” as an OOS freshman, i wouldn’t recommend it because it is the hall most upperclassmen want to live in.

3. correct

My ex-girlfriend used to live in Frontier in her freshman year. In fact, I almost heavily regret NOT living in Frontier my freshman year because most of my friends ended up being people in Frontier (since I had met him through other means). It’s really a good place to be if you’re in CSE since it’s not party like ‘omg, let’s go get wasted’ but it’s not just anti-social. Just cool people who like science.

For sure, don’t touch Territorial. It’s one of those “it’s nice to visit, but you wouldn’t want to live there” kind of places…at least based on your social preferences. Middlebrook is honestly the perfect hall…except for the fact that it’s in the West Bank. Another good chunk of my intellectual friends lived there. It’s nice, has a very good dining hall (in comparison to say, Centennial or Comstock), and you can find all sorts of people (Artsy kind, but also the intellectual kind). Lots of smart people there, hence why it’s kinda considered the nerd hall, in some circles haha.

I personally live in Comstock, and it’s great. I love it. I don’t think it’s “weird” or anything like it. In fact, as far as weird goes, I found Sanford to be rather weird. However, I don’t know if I would recommend for a freshman. It’s really nice though. Really good people. You’ll never find anyone drunk there (at least visibly drunk), but they do go out and drink. Just…responsible people, I guess? Haha, I don’t know what to call it. The placement is also ideal, right next to Coffman, easy access to West Bank, the main area of your classes is only like 3 minutes away. It’s perfect in that regard. The only thing is that it consists of mostly sophomores and up. Not sure if it that bothers you or not .

Yes. Do submit the money asap though, otherwise you might end up with some random hall haha.

I guess I’ll go for Frontier, Middlebrook, Comstock - in that order. I just have to decide whether to ask for the CSE house.

Thanks for the help.

Question on CSE house. GOPHER29 estimates that 12 of 120 rooms in CSE house are female. The Women in Science and Engineering house is also in Frontier, and supposedly has about 30 spaces. Would these be in addition to the approx 24 females in CSE house, or would that be double counting the same group of females?

@HoComom

it is not double counting. there are about 12 rooms of girls in the CSE house (4th floor) in addition to the rooms for Women in Science and Enginnering (3rd floor).
I think there’s quite a few more rooms in WISE, maybe 25-ish??

GOPHER29, thanks much for the response. Any comments on the relative virtues of CSE vs. WISE?

I just got accepted and plan on going, but i haven’t looked into this at all… could somebody tell me where to room?

Engineering
New Jersey kid (not jersey shore d-bag, but i’m really really left wing)
want lots of diversity
want there to be fun stuff, but not feel like i live in animal house. study hard, play hard, just not play hard in my own dorm.

there aren’t a lot of differences between CSE and WISE. a lot of the WISE people come up to study and what not with CSE people. there are more girls rooms on the 3rd floor (non-WISE) and that might be nice to not be one of the few girls on the floor.
