Housing Question

I was accepted into UMN-TC recently, and now I’m deciding what dorm to live in. Right now I’m deciding between Comstock and Frontier, but if you have experience with any of the others I’d be glad to hear it!
Some things about me:
-majoring in a STEM field
-not a partier
-more of an introvert
I’ve heard that Comstock is supposed to have a quieter atmosphere, which I like, but I’ve also heard that it’s hard to meet people there because it’s a lot of upperclassmen. I don’t go out of my way to meet new people, so I feel like it’d be hard to make friends there. Frontier seems to have a reputation as more of a party dorm, but I feel like it’d be way easier to meet people there because it’s all freshmen. Also, any advice on LLCs? Frontier has the WISE LLC, which seems pretty cool. Thanks so much!

@vivalawolfy - Congrats on your acceptance. My Son was accepted yesterday but we have not received the packet in the mail yet. There is a link on the portal “To confirm your enrollement now, click here”. He has not done that yet as he has other application that we are waiting on.

Are you just putting your preferences in for dorms or are you actually selecting a dorm? If you commit later, do you end up further down the list and therefore get less choice in dorms?

Thanks, John

@jpc763 I know when I went on the tour they said to apply to housing as soon as possible, even if you don’t know your admission status. The housing application hasn’t come out yet, but when it does you just need a $25 deposit to “secure your spot.” If you apply for housing later you might not get into the dorm you want, or you might end up sleeping in a lounge for a semester. I’d advise you guys to apply as soon as possible, even if you’re not sure about if you’re going to attend the Twin Cities. I also haven’t “confirmed my attendence” yet, but I definitely plan on filling out that housing app as soon as possible.

Housing application is live. It’s ok to specify a preference, then change that later on. The big thing is to get the application submitted so you are in the queue.

@JBStillFlying - Where is the housing application? I can’t see a link off of the portal page, only the “confirm enrollment” link. Can you tell me where it is?

@JBStillFlying - I think I found it. Is it here: http://housing.umn.edu/housing-sign

@jpc763 yep! thought I had read or heard that it would be up in December but checked yesterday and there it was! The sooner you apply and hold your spot, the higher your place in the housing queue so the likelier it is to get your first choice.

Already started the application. Got as far as paying before I need to get my Son to complete it. He now is 316th in line at U of M housing!

So… where should he live?

Does anyone know if the LLCs change locations/dorms each year? Someone on a different thread posted that the LLC for OOS students (@Home in MN) was in Centennial but it’s listed as being in Territorial on the housing website today. Thanks!

@Nen2625 they may but that doesn’t mean they do. Check the website for the current location of each LLC. The application will state it as well.

@jpc673 I can’t see where my D’s place number is. Where do you see that your son is 316th in line?

D17 prefers Middlebrook and she’s guaranteed a spot there due to honors. She may try to get a single room elsewhere (she’s not thinking much about any of this yet!). Middlebrook is the “boring” dorm which suits her just fine. She wants to be able to study in her dorm room and would prefer that parties be held elsewhere.

Middlebrook is on the west bank so away from the superblock.

@jpc763 - ^^^ Nvm. I figured it out! (This mom gets a gold star . . . ). She’s number 135. Not bad!!!

Okay, now you’ve got to tell me how you figured that out…

@vivalawolfy I spent 10 minutes poring over all the e-mails that came through from the housing application, looking for a sentence that said: “you are number ### in line”. There isn’t one so don’t bother with that. What they will tell you on the “Housing application Initiated” e-mail is that the first application is #162800 and then they’ll give you your number. Subtract and you find your place in the queue this year.

Thanks! I’m 115.

I think you could consider living in CSE Taylor House, which is in Frontier Hall. I have a friend who is living there this year as a freshman and she’s been enjoying life there so far.

Well, those numbers climbed quickly! I just paid the deposit for my son’s housing and he is number 1297 :frowning:

Does anyone know if we can stop at that point? I entered contact and emergency info, but I can’t choose his list of where he would like to live. Will we keep our spot in line? When does the rest of the contract have to be completed?

Thank you!

@uwalummom - yes. You can enter info, change it all you want, or delete then change it later, etc. all the way up to May 2017. Your place in line will not change once they have received your reservation fee. It’s a nice way to design the housing reservation system - and, BTW, explains why that number climbed so quickly! :smiley:

@Nen2625 I believe Centennial is finally going to be remodeled so it won’t be open next year. When we visited last spring, we were shown a room in Centennial. It was really really bad.

Got in the queue since it’s only $25. Surprised the housing application process opens so early and for everyone, not just admitted students.

@sdteak I think it’s Pioneer that is closed for remodeling…it was the oldest dorm on campus.
