housing selection

Haha, yes, the dream dorm. :)

I thought Middlebrook and Comstock looked/sounded nice on the website, but I have heard that you don't really meet people, the dorm room doors are always shut, it's really quiet and it's for the super smart studious types. Stuff like that isn't disclosed on UMN's website obviously, so that's why I'm looking for any insight on the res halls that wouldn't be given on their website. Since it's hard to accommodate to my dream dorm, I guess I'll go this route:

What do you (anyone) know about each res hall? What have you heard?
Middlebrook
Comstock
Territorial
Bailey
Centennial
Frontier
Pioneer
Sanford

Have visited D's friends in Middlebrook-
Super quiet
Rooms are beyond tiny, even by dorm standards (cubby for closet)
Co-ed within floors (sexes separated by the elevators - not much)
My understanding is that Design classes are mostly way east and Middlebrook is in the West Bank area - might be a bit of a haul to classes

We are touring residence halls on Friday, I'll let you know what other insights I gleen from that.

Comstock is basically the average quiet closed door hall, with the perk of a sink in your room :)

And the rec room just got a new TV

I'm bumping this thread in hope that someone will please give more info on each hall. In particular, is Middlebrook really as "antisocial" as people make it out to be? I'm not too social myself, but I would like to make a couple friends and go out once in a while. And is it close to the central campus?

Middlebrook is on the west bank and "central" campus is on the east bank, although when I explored the area it didn't seem too far away no more than the others.

I don't know anything on the social factor of the dorms. Honestly at this point if I hadn't applied I would decide known party hall (SuperBlock) or less party focused hall Middlebrook/Comstock, and just group them like that because at this point there are quite a few applications in ahead of you so choosing a specific hall might not be quite as important at this point.

This is funny, because my friend's son who lives in Middlebrook describes it as a very social place (he lives in the IT Honors section) and says the doors are usually open. Another parent I know says she heard that students play Nerf ball shooting games all evening in that dorm section. The boy I know living in Middlebrook loves it. That's what my son signed up for as his first choice.

I think it's all relative. I have a friend who also lives in the IT honors housing so I've spent some time there and it seems to be more social than the rest of middlebrook, but it's still quiet compared to the dorms in the superblock.

I just visited Frontier and Comstock today, and Frontier seemed way better. It was a lot lighter, and....wider. Yeah, especially the hallways and the stairs. Comstock felt like I was going to be buried alive.

But yeah anyone have any more good info about Frontier? I think I'm planning to be in that one.

I've been thinking about picking frontier... it seems like a middle ground between total party hall and completely anti-social.

Middlebrook - either you hate it or you love it. Yes kids play nerf at middlebrook on Friday and Saturday nights.
Frontier and Territorial - By far the most social dorms on campus. All freshmen dorms. In my opinion the best two dorms hands down for freshmen no matter how much you plan on partying.
University Village - all freshmen football players live there. Extremely nice apartments but have a bad location and nothing is really close.
Sanford and Wilkens - all athletes live here.

I could definitely see my son getting into the nerf shooting games... he enjoys 'airsoft' now (which I doubt he'll have the opportunity to play at college). We're visiting on Friday... I expect he'll want to be in Middlebrook.

If you live and breathe sports and partying, what dorm do you want to be in?

I would be going there as a junior so the freshman-only dorms would be off my list.

So, someone who is majoring in Chem. E., who's looking for a quiet dorm close to the school, Middlebrook is the way to go?

I'd say yeah...there's also Comstock, but I don't think it's not as good for Chem E. as Middlebrook, although it is closer.

Can anyone give the negative aspects of each residence hall?

Most people say Middlebrook being on the West Bank (across the Mississippi River from the largest part of campus) is a bug rather than a feature. I'm told (by this forum) that Middlebrook has some of the worst food, and I can well believe that it does, having eaten the food.

What do you mean by "not as good as for Chem E."?

hey guys, i need some advice on housing.

i’m gonna be studying at Carlson and that’s on the west bank, so Middlebrook is the obvious choice, but from this forum and other sources, i have heard that it’s not the best place to live. i’m a pretty social person and would definitely be partying…and cough*studying. i’m assuming that most of the business classes would be in Hanson or Carlson.

how long does it take to walk to Carlson or bike from Frontier or Territorial?

the thing that worries me the most is the walking that distance in january, not the funnest thing i can think of.

what would be the best choice?..i know that’s vague question but just looking for some suggestions.

Thanks

hell yea i m goin to comstock~~
i love quiet atomsphere
