Picking a dorm

Ok, so I'm trying to decide where I want to live next year. I'm going to be a double major in biology and cognitive science, so I suppose I'm going to have a lot of large intro science lectures in Tech. I don't really mind walking 7-10 minutes to class each day, but I'm from Chicago so I know how fearsome winter can get and how it can often suck to spend 5 minutes outside when it's snowing. I'm a bit of a quiet kid, I'm a non-drinker and would like a suite-style living environment if at all possible. I love downtown Evanston, and going into Chicago on weekends. I really want a friendly, social but yet quiet dorm where I'm not going to have constant drinking and partying around me. Any suggestions for me? Thank you very much.

You sound like a Slivka to me. I stayed there during Preview NU: North Campus, close to Tech, pretty quiet, suites, super-nice/big rooms. But some people say it's anti-social? I dunno.

Yup, definitely sounds like Slivka. I stayed there during PreviewNU too.

I'm pretty much identical to the OP in terms of what I want from a dorm - only difference is that I'll be a MMSS/Econ major. Can anyone tell me about how that's like (i.e. Slivka) in terms of getting to my classes? If it's terribly inconvenient, can you recommend another dorm similar in character/atmosphere?

Thanks.

You definitely sound like Slivka to me, it should be your first choice.

MMSS/Econ classes will vary due to discussion sections, but are on average mid-campus (Econ lectures in Leverone, MMSS office in Annenberg, etc.) so you can really live anywhere.

if you choose slivka... make suuuuure you are a non-drinker.

Hey I suggest you join the Facebook group "northwestern 2011" and look at the discussion board. There's a topic, "having trouble picking your dorm?", that has has several pages of really useful questions and feedback.

I'm in the process of figuring out which dorms I'd like too, and from what I know slivka sounds good for you. I've heard, unlike elsijfdl, that slivkans often like to go out to parties, just not to bring them back to the dorm. I wouldn't know from personal experience whether or not this is true.

Thanks for the responses so far. Yes, I am a non-drinker and I'm sure of it, and I'm also looking over the facebook group's comments too.

Slivka sounded good to me (science dorm, relatively new, close to my classes, etc.), I was a little concerned about the fact that it's on North Campus, which seems to be much more frat-centric than south campus. I like to have fun, but I'm honestly not a partier; I enjoy things like movies, going out to eat, seeing live music/theatre performances, going to Chicago, and would like to be around kids with similar interests. I've also had experience with boarding school, and I've really found that having great people around you (not as your roomates, but as your "suitemates") really makes life enjoyable and I'd like an environment that accomodates relationships between members of the same res hall.

I'd love more info about Slivka, and about potentially Slivka-like options on south campus. Thanks

how about west fairchild ISRC? it has a suite setting, co-ed dorms, social people who aren't really into partying, at the heart of south campus (perfect location IMHO), wide variety of people from all over the globe. one shortfall though, is that the rooms are rather small.. anw, i'm rather similar to you, just not very quiet. i've looked at NU'10 and '11 facebook discussions... i guess the more "suitable" dorms are ayers CCI, ISRC, slivka.. basically, the res colleges.

CCI is a more social dorm than Slivka but is also North.

Just because Slivka is north doesn't mean it's frat-tastic. They're the ones who call the UP when the frats are being too loud and they're trying to study/sleep...not the ones who are rushing. (Sorry to generalize but this is true for the majority of my experience with Slivka-ites.) But yeah, I wouldn't worry about that party mentality seeping into Slivka.

Down south, 1835 Hinman is suite style and doesn't have quite the party rep most dorms do. Has AC, too.

Just to add on to what dfleish said, 1835 Hinman also has a very good dining hall! I would def consider it if I were you.

rooney's got it, a lot of slivkans party, but they dont bring it back.

and dfleish, the students aren't the ones that call, the staff area coordinator lives on the 1st floor so she's the one that calls the UP

I've looked up more info on Hinman and Slivka, they look like they'd be good for me. However, reading the reviews of the dorms on NU's site (it's that function where you can view student surveys about various NU things, I forgot what it's called), there are some things that bother me about both of them. They both are viewed as very insular and anti-social it seems... I don't want that (again, I'm just a pre-frosh reading other NU students opinions of the dorms, what do I really know? (and sorry to anyone who may be offended)). I don't wanna have roomate/suitmates/dorm-mates or whatever who have drunken parties every night (or even any night) or come home under the influence, however I do want an outgoing dorm where people are just... friendly to each other and actually do things on weekends (like go to Chicago/Navy Pier, go to Downtown Evanston, see a play, see a movie, go to a concert, etc.) Hinman and Slivka aren't exactly portrayed that way from what I've read.

Does anyone have an further comments on potential good dorms for me/comments on what life is like in Slivka and/or Hinman?

what about Bobb or Allison?

^ Err... based on what I've read and heard from students, Bobb would be complete suicide for him/her. Allison (South) and Elder (North, all-freshmen) are typically known for being a nice balance of social and studying. If you want more of a close-knit weekend-outings kinda thing, maybe try a res college? I've heard pretty good things about Shepard and Willard, although they're on South Campus...

i'm living in slivka, and honestly, its just that people really focus on the negatives. It's a res college and the reason it seems anti social is because the people in it are really close and tight with each other, and not neccesarily "as much" with people outside slivka. just looking at what you want with the dorm doing stuff is very res college-ey, in terms of drunken neighbors, you may get that anywhere, it's all a matter of chance. My suite in slivka has two frat members, only one has gotten really wasted and been annoying once during the year. The people in my suite go to downtown evanston to get pizza every week, and they bought a turducken this year. THeres almost always someone in the lounge playing mario kart. The pres, vp, facilities, and academic chair of slivka are all in my suite.

thats just kind of how life is, i really didnt like it at first because i was the only freshman in my suite, but in a few weeks it got a lot better because they were so nice/outgoing and they wanted to include me. even though i'm always too busy to grab pizza with them, they invite me every week.

i guess if anyone has questions about slivka just PM me.

bobb, allison, and elder are all party dorms, fun to live in, but not if you are a "non drinker" who wants a "quiet dorm"

also allison is kind of a far walk from tech, which he said he doesn't want

hey, im in a same kind of situation. need some valuable advice here. I would prefer a place which is quiet and comfortable for studying and staying and at the same time very friendly. I am not a party creature but like meeting new people.

I am considering Slivka as one of my choices. How about CCI, Shepard, 600 Lincon & Hinman House?

thanks

Hi, I also need your help here. I'm also a non drinker, preferring "a place which is quiet and comfortable for studying and staying and at the same time very friendly". I'm international without much money to spend. I'll study Statistics at Northwestern. I have made a list here:
Allison Hall
Rogers House
Sargent Hall
Elder Hall
Hinman House
600 Lincoln
Bobb Hall
McCulloch Hall

Would you please give some advice?

Can anyone give any information on the South Quads? I have no idea what they are.

And what do people think of this list? I am going to be a theatre major who wants to stay south and I like to party but also like to have some downtime....
1) Willard
2) Allison
3) Shepard
4)??
5)??
Jones will be either 4 or 5...depending on what my last choice is.

By the way, what kind of cooking utensils can be found in the kitchenettes? Can students use the kitchenettes for free?
