Housing troubles for the Soph,Juniors and Seniors?

I read the WS News online and there seems to be a shortage for some 500 students? Hmm. I'm wondering if this is a one off or is this the trend for housing after the freshman year? When do incoming Freshmen find out about their housing for their Soph year? Spring or Summer of 2007? Thanks!

No it's not the trend. I don't think it's happened before this year and is due to a larger than expected freshman class this year. Housing selection is happening now so next year's freshmen will be doing at this time next year.

When do they recieve answers by? This time next year too?

Answers for what? Housing? Like I said housing selection is going on NOW so they'll know this time next year. You get your dorm assignment then have to go with your prospective roommate(s) to the dorm at a specified time to actually choose your room.

yah, housing..thanks.

Actually, it is untrue that we have returning students at NYU who are waiting to hear about housing on-campus because of "a larger than expected freshmen class this year." In fact, the Admissions and Housing Offices will have to wait until May 1st to know exactly what the size of this year's freshmen class will be. Additionally, because we did have more students who chose to enroll last year then we anticipated we have carefully considered the number of applicants who were offered admission this year so as to not cause over-enrollment which does affect things like the availability of housing and our average class size.

What the Housing Office at NYU has communicated to the Admissions professionals at our school is that they anticipate finding housing for all returning students who are still waiting to hear about their placement. Because of changes in how early returning students are asked to renew their housing on-campus we found that many students who requested housing last year did so even though they were considering (and eventually ended up) living off-campus either in a private apartment or at one of our study abroad sites. We can assure you that the Housing Office has made the placement of these students their highest priority and we do not have any reason to believe we will not find a spot for these students.

NYU-Thank you for the clarification of the situation. I will breath easier now.... The "problem" sounds like it's under control.

You are very welcome! Again, I hope to convey on behalf of our school that we completely understand that our current students are concerned about their placement. Housing on-campus has evolved as quickly as the interest in our institution has. (For instance, I attended NYU and we had 9 residence halls when I graduated in the mid-90's. Today we have 23!) We are making every effort now and on a long term basis to address the need for on-campus housing for our students. We hope that some current initiatives, including the building of a new 23 story residence hall in the East Village, will continue to improve the quality of dorm life at NYU.

i would like to experiance dorming but i dont have the money for freshman year but i might be able to sophmore year..if you dont dorm freshman year will you be able to start dorming sophmore year?

bump.......

If you don't start dorming freshman year, you won't have the housing guarantee. When you want housing, you'll have to apply in May through the waitlist and wait for a space to become available. You won't get to pick a roomate or even do building selection. Everything will be randomly done assuming that there is space.

nyuadmissions, with all due respect, reread my post. When I spoke about a larger than usual freshman class, I was talking about THIS year's freshmen, as in, students who are currently freshmen. Obviously, no one knows what next year's freshmen class will be like. If you're going to be correcting information posted here, please be sure you know what you're correcting.

While it's all well and good that NYU anticipates finding housing for all returning students, that doesn't go far enough to calm the nerves of 500 returning students who currently have no idea where they'll be living next year, especially when they know that all other returning students are currently choosing their dorm rooms. Even if housing is found, where, my I ask, will it be? Chances are that it won't be in a favorable location.

I thought I heard something about a new dorm being built? Has anyone heard about that or am I imagining things? Does anyone know when it's suppose to be done by (obviously not in time for this next year). Just curious

Matth - With all due respect to you, we will not entertain conversations with individuals on this board who have repeatedly provided incorrect information about our institution to the students and families who use this site.

Oh please. You may not want to "entertain conversations" but people have a right to know that there are 500 current students who don't know where they'll be living in September.

Also, nice diversion on your part, in not addressing what I posted in post #12.

In any case, anyone who's interested in actually speaking to/reading about this issue can visit the nyu livejournal community, and see that it is, in fact, a real issue with current students. PM me if you want a link.

As well, people also have the right to know that much of the information that is posted here from "students who attend NYU" or "students who know about NYU" is actually incorrect.

Does this housing shortage mean that transfer students are less likely to get school-provided housing?
