I found out today that due to a freshman housing shortage, that I do not currently have a dorm to live in next year. Is there anyone else who has run into this problem/knows anything about this problem? Also does anyone know the chances of me actually getting a dorm?

My daughter got the same email saying the Freshman dorms were overbooked but they said housing is gauranteed. I have to trust that they’ll find rooms for you all!

Just out of curiosity willtavlin, were you admitted from the wait list? My daughter was and I’m wondering if it’s only the wait list kids that aren’t getting assigned to dorms.

Hey! NYU sophomore here : )

The same thing happened last year. The students who were in this group ended up in upper-classmen dorms (Coral, I think?). Housing is definitely becoming a problem as NYU increases enrollment. However, as far as I know, every freshman who requests housing receives housing…some just have to wait a little longer than others.

Also, I’m not sure if it’s just waitlisted students…there were a few kids who applied ED (last year, anyways) and had the same thing happen.

I think kids are commenting about this on the NYU FB site so you may gather more intel there. I’ve heard some received assignments today to University Place which is a dorm for upper-classmen/women. The housing office said that it was done as a lottery this year rather than based on preferences because of the large numbers this year and that everyone who got theirs in by the deadline was entered into the lottery simultaneously. They said that all of the freshman dorms are currently at capacity. They expect a number of students to Not enroll/ arrive in August and that they will be able to place the rest of the students then. This really seems terribly frustrating and very regrettable for students who are trying to plan their arrival but it may mean receiving an even better dorm assignment than if they tried to mush more students into rooms now. I have heard that in past years they put students up in hotels temporarily when necessary, which could actually be a fun plus for a short bit. They definitely guarantee housing so I assume they are working hard to get this resolved sooner rather than later. I’m sure they realize how important this issue is, especially for freshmen. I’m sorry you didn’t find out the decision today but hopefully it will mean an even better placement by waiting a little longer.

@valmoisy, yes I was waitlisted. I also know another kid who was waitlisted and is in the same situation as me. Seems to be a trend.

No, I wasn’t waitlisted, but I applied for housing literally at midnight when the application was due. Hopefully my carelessness will earn me a temporary hotel room. We’re supposed to get updated no later than July 22 which came 12 hours earlier for me because I’m in China right now and can’t get updates on this from Facebook. Anxiously waiting!

you’ll probably be put in a hotel. it won’t be fun. i had friends who were placed in a hotel all the way by penn station, which means you absolutely must take the subway and not walk. you really miss out on the college experience by missing welcome week by being stuck all the way in midtown. it sucks and nyu needs to do something about their ridiculous housing problem.

I got my first choice housing (Founders) after applying basically last. It is a lottery, so there’s hope (and anxiety) for everyone! If you get put in a hotel, hey, subways are fun and I’d be somewhat jealous of you and you WILL MAKE FRIENDS!

I’m an incoming transfer student to Tisch, and I’m a victim of the housing shortage.

It’s ridiculous, and incredibly frustrating, but for anyone with questions, I have a few answers after calling yesterday.

They told me the hotel for the displaced will be in Chelsea, which, after looking at Google Maps, looks like it’ll be over 2 miles away. Being away from the college campus life will be annoying, and I’m sure there will be some things inevitably missed during Welcome Week, but, HEY! the college is giving us free unlimited Metro Passes (YAY :sarcasm: ).

You won’t pay more than most people living on-campus, but they didn’t give me any significant figures.

This is a horrible situation, and NYU is definitely not making a good first impression on this transfer student.

I actually think Chelsea is not that far. It may not be more than 1-2 subway stops. Chelsea is a very cool area and tons of students. the main buildings of The New School are there and it has a lot going on. This is definitely frustrating and disappointing but you will be able to participate in everything during welcome week and the subway is enormously easy to learn and to use, even late at night , especially between these two neighborhoods. What part of Tisch are you in? Have they given you any idea how long it will take to find a permanent dorm for you? Hang in there- this should not have happened but it will be a distant memory soon and you’ll be in and around the Tisch building most of your time very soon.

djromano, could you give more details on the chelsea placement? Did you get assigned your temporary hotel housing already? If not, do you know when you will given your assigned housing?

Moreover, didn’t NYU say taht our earliest move-in date is September 2 (right before calsses start?) I am dreading this as well, seriously it’s one month before Fall semester starts and I still have no idea where I’m going to be placed.

Hi, rising sophomore here.

Some of my friends were placed into temporary hotels at the beginning, which is a bit of a pity but they were all eventually placed into housing.

Last year, there was spillover housing into Coral Towers (upperclassmen dorm) on 14th/3 Av. This is speculation, but I believe this year’s spillover housing might be U-Hall near Union Square(14th/4 Av), as I will be helping with Freshmen Move-In to that building this year even though I heard it is an upperclassmen dorm. But again, this part is speculation.

In the end, you’ll be fine, and chances are you’ll be placed into better upperclassmen dorms than the freshmen dorms (albeit slightly farther from campus), but move-in will be a hassle as you’ll probably move into your dorm from your hotel right before or during school as opposed to during welcome week.

Lightningmom - I was placed in the Playwrights Horizons Theater School at Tisch, which I’m really looking forward to. The person I talked to said they’re hoping to get everyone out of the hotel within three weeks, but worst case, if they can’t find a space for a student, that student would be in the hotel all year.

shuffleace - No, I haven’t been placed in a specific hotel or room yet. The person I talked to just told me that, while they haven’t publicized the location of the hotel, that it will probably be in Chelsea. Move-in day is supposed to be in exactly one month, August 25 for Welcome Week. That’s something I’m planning on calling about tomorrow - whether the displaced people will still be able to move in then. If not, I will truly be angry, as I was looking forward to Welcome Week.

This also affects my meal plan selection, as I was counting on having a kitchen to cook some of my meals in. The Housing rep told me that we can still change before a specific date in early September, but that it would be a crapshoot as to whether they find rooms before then. Also, for any transfer/upperclassmen who will be put in temporary housing, they assured me they would not place older students in Freshmen dorms. Being an older-than-average student (I’m 25), this was a big concern of mine

djromano - I know this really sucks I’m about to panic as well and am actually in the process of searching for possible alternative off campus housing as well. If we’re going to be in Chelsea (assuming we get pushed to temporary hotel rooms), that’s going to be pretty far from campus, and the cafeterias…

When they reply regarding the move in date for temporary housing students, please post the response here… - from what I know I emailed them and after a while they told me that if we are to be placed to a dorm, then we can move-in at the regular August 25, if we’re assigned to a temporary hotel, we can only enter starting September 2 (a day before classes start), forcing us to either miss out on welcome week (and dorm preparations like buying textbooks) or stay at a temporary hotel (which will cost a bundle). I am seriously hating this right now - moreover I wish they could just tell us our assigned housing (whether it’s a dorm or just a temporary hotel room) fast because I feel like we’re just kind of stuck in limbo…

A month before school starts and we still have no idea where we’re going to stay…

Hey everyone! I’m an NYU senior. If there are issues with dorms I would recommend having freshmen go onto their NYUHome account and go to NYU Student Life and on that page there is an Off-Campus Housing Directory. I only lived in a dorm freshman year, (in retrospect I wish I didn’t) but on the housing registry it’s easy to find NYU students/grads looking for roommates and in a lot of cases it is ALOT cheaper than dorms. If the freshmen are somewhat familiar with the city, it might be a good option and will save money in the long run!

Shuffleace - the person I talked to on the phone assured me that move-in day would remain August 25, even if you’re placed in temporary housing.

I don’t know why they told you September 2, but, logistically, it wouldn’t make sense to move in the same day as the first day of classes. Not only would you miss Welcome Week, miss getting your ID and meeting with a counselor, but for those with morning classes (that’s a theater day for me, 9-5), it would be a logistical nightmare. Maybe they meant that classes start September 2?

The key here is that IF we were to be placed into a regular dorm, then we would be allowed to move in August 25. IF were to be placed into a temporary hotel room, the earliest move in date would be September 2 (a DAY before classes start, since classes actually start in September 3).

Yes technically we would still be allowed to participate in Welcome Week - it’s just that we cannot MOVE-IN to our temporary hotel room until September 2… We would have to stay at a hotel, then move in on September 2.

Of course if we were lucky and assigned to a dorm, then we wouldn’t have to worry about this…

We may be in two slightly different circumstances, I don’t know.

But I made it extremely clear to the person I talked to this morning that I was asking if I would be able to move in on August 25 if I was assigned to a temporary hotel, and he said yes. Honestly, until more information comes out, I have to assume he was telling the truth.

Especially as a first-year transfer, attending Welcome Week is imperative, if just for Orientations. I can’t imagine they would force people to come into NYU cold and without orientation

Anyone get their housing assignments yet? I thought they would reply on July 29 (like they stated) and still heard nothing from them… WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO TELL US OUR ROOM ASSIGNMENT!!!
