Waitlist for housing

Does anyone know what the chances are, for a freshman placed on the housing waitlist, to get a spot in on-campus housing (I understand this only happens if someone else cancels housing)? Is it a long-shot to get placed in a residence hall when one is on the housing waitlist?

Also, what is the percentage of freshman living off-campus? Has anyone had experience with the off-campus housing situations around NYU?

Thanks!

Are you hoping to gain housing for Spring?

It is very likely that NYU will offer you housing for Spring semester as the number of people in the dorms drop because more people study abroad in the Spring. This is the reason why NYU created the Spring in New York program, so that they can fill the dorms.

If you didn't accepting/apply for housing with your application (and continue with housing for all 4 years), you'll have to apply for housing each and every year via the waitlist. This means that you can't choose who to live with nor participate in the housing lottery.

Finding off-campus housing takes a lot of work but many upperclassmen do find apartments.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not looking for Spring housing. I had to take a personal leave of absence this year, as a freshman, so I (hope to) return as a freshman next fall. The problem is, with me being on the waitlist, I'm very uncomfortable searching for off-campus housing, and I know that's recommended since on-campus is no guarantee. I'm new to the city, and want the support of dorm life. I guess my biggest concern now is finding out how the housing waitlist works, what my chances are for being placed in a residence hall (any one at all, really), and how soon I'll know if I can get into a residence hall. Otherwise, I'm afraid that not having a spot in a residence hall next fall will influence whether or not I decide to return to NYU. I've e-mailed housing for more information, but haven't got a reply yet.
