I currently live off campus and I'm planning on applying for housing for the Fall '09 semester. The lady I talked to on the phone said that the wait list opens on May 1st. My intentions are staying up all night and chain refreshing the website in hopes of being the first one to sign up on the wait list (no worries, I'm an insomniac anyway). I just have a few questions.

1) If I were to get housing, when would I find out? **Would be a huge help if you could give me an estimation.
2) Are there a certain amount of rooms designated for only wait list students?
3) How many students on the wait list usually get housing?
4) If I was one of the first 10 people to sign up on the wait list, do you think I'd get housing?

My lease expires in May, and I'm worried I'll be stuck without on-campus or off-campus housing.

Being admitted on the waitlist isn’t much different than being admitted otherwise.

1) Shortly after you put your deposit down (which needs to be done ASAP).
2) No, you get last pickings on quad assignments.
3/4) Housing is guaranteed for all incoming freshman.

You know that move in isn’t until late August, right?

I think this was a housing question, not an admission question, for a student already attending. My understanding is that once you move off campus it is very difficult to get back on. Maybe in 2010 when they have new dorm.

prog, here’s the problem: Even if you’re #1 on the housing waitlist, there won’t be space until all of the people already on campus are de-tripled. De-tripling hasn’t been finished until a bit into the spring the past couple of years, and they’re projecting even more triples this fall–so the earliest you’re going to get offered a space is probably spring 2010. Campus res has said the new building will be opening fall 2010, so unless construction goes ahead of schedule (LOL!) those spots won’t be able to help you out this coming school year. If you’re U3/U4 with a high enough GPA, you might have better luck with the apartments waitlist since (correct me if I’m wrong, anyone?) I don’t think they offer those spots to tripled freshmen.

Your best bet is going through with your current plan to be first on the waiting list, and trying to find a month-to-month lease off-campus if at all possible, so that you’ll be able to drop everything to move into a dorm if you get a spot.

Yeah, I am in exactly the same situations as you. After living off campus for a year, I realized that I would be much more active if I were on camous when it comes to club and team involvements as well as a better social life. Unfortunately, the only reason I had to move off camous in the first place is because of the extreme high prices for housing and food at stony brook despit the bad accomodations/quality.

Even so I am willing to go back to the regular dorms. The good news is that if you are U2/U4, you have a shot at the west appartments, whose waitlist is much more forgiving and there is a greater rate of vacancy(a lot of people graduate). I called the woman and she said the same list applied for the West appartments and regular dorms–can anyone confirm this?

In any case, regular dorms will be tough since like other have said, people are tripling in double sized rooms! I think we will only have an answer somewhere in july-august. In the meantime, I will look for a month to month lease at a better place than the piece of crap I am currently in.

PS: If anyone is interested in seeking a roomate in a off campus double room, please let me know. I am a very considerate roomate and think tis would help ease the costs until we get housing.

A couple of years ago, there were separate waitlists for dorm doubles, dorm singles, West doubles, and West singles, and you could add yourself to as many or as few of them as you were willing to live in. Maybe it’s changed to one master list, but I doubt it–the list was set up so that people in regular dorms could apply for vacancies in apartments and/or singles as well as so people who live off-campus and want to move into a dorm could do so.
