Housing woes...loud/inconsiderate people involved

To be fair, sound can travel weirdly at times, especially in older buildings with unusual pipe layouts and ductwork. It is theoretically possible they just don’t realize how loud they are.

These might work and a very cheap solution:

Sorry for the delay in replying, as I was in class all day!

My roommate and I did end up talking to the fellows upstairs. We live in an apartment complex owned by the school, so we have 2 RAs for the entire building. Apparently the two people upstairs didn’t realize the walls were so thin that we could hear them talking. They promised to be quiet and one of them even gave me his cellphone number in case they started to get noisy again, which was nice.

We were pretty polite in asking and they were very understanding as well. They ended up being really quiet last night, which was so nice for a change. Let’s see if they can keep up the good work tonight as well.

As for the whole RA not doing anything: our other RA explained that they’d have to write up a whole noise violation report and I guess its like a bad mark on the offenders; so the RAs wanted us to make sure to exhaust all our means first before they intervene and have to make things worse.

Sounds like a good plan. Don’t be shy about using the cell phone number as needed.

Good for you, CrownOftheSea! You handled it well. The guys upstairs sound perfectly nice, too. The RA wanting to avoid sticking them with a noise violation sounds perfectly reasonable to me. All’s well that ends well. (Now you may have to wonder about how much the people underneath you can hear YOU! Maybe a rug helps. Some apartment complexes require them for that reason.)

Very good, point, Consolation.

It is very satisfying to hear a straight-up happy resolution to someone’s problem. Thank you!

Terrific! As good of an outcome as you could expect … and doesn’t it feel good that you handled it yourself?

Nice work, OP!

Great job! Hopefully this will get better now.

“At that point she informed them that exessive noise and especially verbal abuse will not be tolerated. Again it was kind of funny because other students came into the hall hearing the discussion going on and when the boys finally realized that intimidation would not work they turned down the music closed their door and were not heard from. Everyone on the floor cheered and my D went to her room shaking but proud that she did not back down”

Richie Cunningham once asked Fonzi about his tough-guy reputation, and Fonzi explained that once you get a reputation for not backing down, people tend to leave you alone (“peace through strength”). It’s the same reason that it’s a good strategy when you first go to prison or get a new job to pick a confrontation with one of the toughest people…others will see that you aren’t afraid and will think twice about messing with you.

I’ll keep that in mind for the next time I go to prison, Schmaltz.

Pizzagirl, what were you in for the first time? And did your kids use your incarceration as fodder for any of their essays, or are felonious parents a subject best kept on the down low?

The word on the street is that PG was the bagperson when Blago was sending tribute to a certain White House resident. But she got executive clemency before doing hard time, so it must have been for something else. Possibly an NU debate team pointshaving caper.

Who can remember, sidelines? So many things … so little hard time …

***? Off topic much

Crownofthesea I am glad it worked out for you and that is what is ultimately important but I strongly disagree with the RA telling you " that they’d have to write up a whole noise violation report and I guess its like a bad mark on the offenders; so the RAs wanted us to make sure to exhaust all our means first before they intervene and have to make things worse. " because had they informed everyone about the quiet hours and such (you said that they didn’t) then all they had to do is talk to everyone not pointing anyone out and say sorry but did forget to say that quiet hours are :so and so. In my opinion that was a cop out by the RA’s. Not everything has to be written up when it is a lack information given and a little common sense can be used.

My D’s situation has gotten quite good actually, she has 41 students 15 of whom are transfer students , 5 freshman and the rest are regulars. She had a note slid under door on Wednesday saying " you don’t know me but I think you are cool and I already feel that I can count on you. I know we will be friends soon" they put their initial on the page so my D knows who it is.
I think being an RA will a fantastic experience for her.
