Housing Debate

I know that housing has been touched on a bit in other threads, but it's probably easier if housing has its own topic.

I'm looking to live in an awesome, Gothic house with private bathrooms. Finding the toilet already filled with urine, or even a few floaters, every time I go to the bathroom for an entire year is not my idea of fun. My mother raised me to be a man principled in the art of bathroom etiquette, what can I say?

So that narrows my choices down to Broadview, Palevsky, Shoreland, and possibly B-J (The one guide says that "some" rooms have a private bath (and/or fireplace! What the funk...). And since I have some unhealthy fixation on the Gothic architecture scattered around campus, I'd really prefer Broadview, Shoreland, or B-J over Palevsky.

B-J would be awesome with a mess hall right within its confines, and they offer singles if I were to choose that risky option of solitude. Plus the Law Library is right next door if kids start blasting too much Vivaldi while I'm cramming. Like I said before, though, I'm not sure that private bathrooms for freshmen are possible at B-J, even for EA'ers.

Broadview is everything I want, and all rooms have private bathrooms. However it's a bit farther from campus than B-J.

Shoreland, although the farthest from campus (or so its "on the lake shore" location implies), seems like my favorite so far since B-J's bathroom situation is hazy. International print and T.V. media would be perfect for strengthening the one or two foreign languages I plan to continue mastering. Private bathrooms in all rooms, and they offer some triples. If I am not going to go for a single, I might as well hit up a triple-jobber. If I don't like one roomate, maybe the other one will be dec. :)

Post your thoughts on housing and the logic behind it.

Brine

broadview isnt THAT far though, while shoreland is actually out of walking distance....

i really want a double, and i want someplace that allows smoking (yeah, i suck, i know i know) so is palevsky my only option? shoreland im not really considering because its SO far, but it really would be the best--- HUGE FREAKING ROOMS--- and b-j has community bathrooms... ew....
what about stony?? apartments are amazing and at least its walking distance...
are the kids and atmosphere in the different buildings different? what has anyone heard??

I think for science or math majors it would be great to live off of campus. I could see myself going insane if I had to stay so close after a bunch of hard work/tests in those areas. Then again, I don't wake up anywhere close to on time so being on campus may be good as well. I'm leaning to Shoreland though.

Not really. They are both practically next door to each other. Broadview is only one block "closer" and they share a bus route.

Broadview is for the extremely anti-social, so avoid it if you like having friends.

Thanks for the forewarning on Broadview, keelee2. Where'd that tidbit come from?

I have heard the same about Broadview by just searching about info.
Originally, my first choice was Broadview because of the private baths. There is some place at uchicago.edu where you can actually see pics of the bathrooms.
BUT! It's too far from campus..esp. in the winter. Its about a 15-20 minute walk and bus rides...nuh uh.
BJ has private bathrooms? I need to read more closely. Jeez, this is a releif.
I am really scared about community bathrooms, but if I have to sacrifice that for a private room and closeness to the campus, I will. blahk

what about breckinridge? okay, so there aren't single bathrooms. however, it's in a pre-war building--key for me--as opposed to the characterless flourescence of max. p. it has singles, and BIG ones. and it's not too far. right on 59th, fairly close. maclean is smoking, amalia. however it only has one double.

At Breckinridge the radiator heaters are not strategically positioned and no AC-only Max and BJ have AC and trust me, in the early fall and spring/summer you NEED AC. I saw some kids at Breckenridge sticking their heads out of the window one time. But thats just my opinion.
Here's pics, if you haven't already seen them of Breckenridge:
<a href="http://www.rh.uchicago.edu/hds/housing/halls/graphics/Breck/Pages/3.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.rh.uchicago.edu/hds/housing/halls/graphics/Breck/Pages/3.html</a></p>

theoretically, you can accept the offer of admission and still go to another school right. it says you have not submitted a deposit to another school yet. I would like to attend, most likely will but if the financial aid is not great enough there is no way I will be able to go, :-(. Am I right in assuming this?

erin: how'd you get those shots? would you post the link for other pics of dorm rooms?

My daughter is a freshman at UChicago. She was admitted early action but couldn't commit until merit award info arrived, making it affordable. If you are admitted EA and return your housing information before mid-April (not sure of the date, but it's in your packet) you qualify for preferential housing assignments. My daughter received a single in Burton-Judson and loves it there. Burton-Judson, Max P and Snell-Hitch**** are all conveniently close to classes, something that is probably important when it's 2 degrees outside and snowing. B-J and S-H are gothic, Max P is modern but it looks nice. Pierce is a typical 70s dorm with small, boxy rooms and not a lot of character, but some like it. Shoreland's rooms are huge but it's quite a distance from campus and is a former hotel that is going to be closed sometime in the near future, I believe. Also, I don't think its Gothic. My daughter likes having a single, and her dorm is very social. She says they work hard during the week and have fun on weekends. Lots of activities, dinners, trips downtown and to sporting events, etc.

I'll try to find more pics....I know there's one out there on Broadview

Ah, found it.
