Housing

When filling out the housing application, do you get to say which residence hall you'd like to live in? Also, do people of the same major often get paired together? I don't want to request anyone, but I definitely want to room with someone of the same major. Is there any way to say this on the application?

you do get to list preferences on your housing. Honors students can get placed together and some sports do. not sure about majors.

You can request dorm, room type (single or double), and specific roommate but I don’t think you are able to request generically for a roommate in your same major. I don’t recall but if there is an additional comments area in the application you could add this request there. However, unless things have changed, it does appear that possibly for certain majors that roommates in the same major are matched. When our D entered UD as a freshman she was matched randomly with another Nursing major as a roommate. None of your housing preferences are guaranteed however. You will find out your housing assignment the first week of August. Good luck.

Thanks!

I wonder how many students select single rooms. What are the pros/cons

I don’t have any stats as to how many chose single rooms but every year there is a few kids that get single rooms even if they didn’t request it. The pros and cons are pretty much what you would think they would be. You have the advantage of having your own room. (although slightly smaller than a double) it’s all yours. No room mate issues to deal with. On the disadvantage end you don’t have room mate issues. lol… If you really crave relationships with those on your floor you will have to be sure to put yourself out there and get to know people ASAP. You will not have that room mate in your room as a “safety friend” once you retreat back to your room. This is probably the most important during the first month or so of school as you tend to hang with your roomie the most during this time. Whether your become best friends or simply room mates that person you live with is the person you really rely on since you are with them the most at the start of the year. If you are in a single and on a floor with a lot of them then you will have many in the same boat as you.

If you get in off the waitlist is there a problem getting housing?

There will be no problem getting housing (all freshman are guaranteed housing) Housing assignments are not announced until the first week of August.
