My son has been researching. He was awarded Provost scholarship and will get full bright futures. He has been accepted into the honors program. He isn’t sure he wants to live in Towers due to the $. It is pricey comparatively, especially since he doesn’t want to attend the first summer. Anyone have input into this decision? He is budgeting and doesn’t feel he needs to live in the honors dorm.
And should we put our housing deposit down to ensure he has housing if he decides to attend? He really wants to wait for UF…
ufmomfriend the provost is 3750 a semester. He wants to stretch as much to cover housing and meal plan. He is working on outside scholarships as well. If he did towers for 2 semesters rather than year contract it is 4440 a semester. He's thinking he could stretch the Provost to cover more of his costs if he chose another alternative.
Just wondering how many honors students choose other alternatives? And any downside to choosing another alternative?
I don’t know about other honors students, but Neptune could be a good choice. His own room with 3 other suite mates. It is a walk to get to classroom buildings. But is very quiet and has study rooms. Has one kitchen per floor all freshman. You would need to put down a housing deposit soon if you wanted it- it is very popular.
The towers are a year lease, only the athletes get the fall/spring plans and the rate is actually the same total as the year. My son also got provost and full BF. He actually also has prepaid college too but still got back huge refund. Neptune is clser to the academic end of campus.my son is in tower 3 and doesn’t have meal plan as he says the food is awful and the plan is too expensive. He has full kitchen in tower.,privatebedroom with a full size bed. He doesn’t have a car at school so gets groceries thru shipt or when we visit. He’s taking 16 credits this first semester and again in spring. My son is in the MEDD program, earning 2 degrees in 4 years ( biomedical sciences and computer engineering ). Any questions, I’m here
He will be fine where ever he lands. Towers is 11.5 month contract. My kids, now junior and senior, have never done meal plan. You can still eat at cafes even if you are not on plan. Seemed expensive to us.
Good luck and let us know what he decided!
Go Knights!
My D18 also did not do the meal plan- she says the food is awful. She loves Neptune, but it’s a mile walk to her classes- so I wouldn’t call it close. It is close to the gym, so that’s a plus if you like to workout.
He should put down deposit asap as housing at UCF goes quickly from what I have heard. My son is in the same boat - same scholarships. He chose Neptune as his first choice with private 4 suite room, it was much more affordable than the LLC and so will cover some of his food plan. But I am not sure on the chances of him getting Neptune in a private room as a first year.
My DD is in on campus housing in Lake Claire. She finds them to be conparable, but Lake Claire is cheaper. Honors housing is not a big deal. Though some of her friends have found the LLCs to be a good way to meet people with similar interests. I do reccomend you put down your deposit as early as possible though, as that improves your chances of getting your first choice housing. My DD has found on campus housing to be very convenient and similiar in pricing to the off campus options.
My daughter and I are trying to fill the housing app out now but it won’t let us choose any of the drop downs (Nike, Hercules, Apollo, nothing) in the preference page. Does this mean they are filled? I’m panicking now. And of course the housing office is closed until Jan 2.
