Housing

Haha I agree with headacheartist on that. It's definitely personal issues depending on the person. There are single rooms at UT, but they cost ALOT more. Personally I wouldn't mind living with someone, but I just hope I don't have a roomate from hell.

Even if you get a roomate from hell you can either ask for a change or you'll have lots of stories to tell your friends :p

i agree with headacheartist...at least you can pick who you marry...you can pick roommates too, but theres a whole 'nother kind of ordeal in marriage.

Ok I can totally help on this one, so online you can apply for housing and basically you just give your address and everything and pay $50. Anyways then if you try and go and select what dorms you would want it says that the are all full. so i called and they said that it is a well known fact in texas that you apply for housing at the same time you apply. so some people forfeit the $50 if they don't get in. Anyways all of the spots were filled up super early and now if you sign up you are on a waiting list. Point is that you should look up private housing as a back up because you won't find out until June or July if a room opened up for you. in two words: screwy situation

Where do you see that the dorms are full? I can't find it anywhere. When I go to the Housing Status website off BeALonghorn it says

Your housing application is active.

We offer housing contracts as space becomes available when:

You are admitted to the University and pay your admission enrollment deposit.

When I go to the "Update Housing Choices" it says:

You do not have an active housing contract in existence.

I got a housing contract and signed it. If you do not get a contract then you are not guaranteed space.

If I haven't received one yet? Don't you have to pay the enrollment deposit before you get the housing contract?

Lauraj87,
All that stuff you said, did it happen to you recently? And which dorms did it say were full? That kind of creeps me out because I want a private room! (or at least private bath)

P.S. What suburb do you live in? I used to live in Barrington

Tourjette, it happened to me this morning (yeah spring break) All of them are full. Or atleast that is what they told me. go to austindorm.com though and you can see private options. I think i am going to opt for Carillion or something like that. It has private baths and is pretty good pricewise.
P.S.- st.charles-do you still live in IL?

ok i should rephrase- they already have enough housing contracts for all of their rooms and a hefty waitinglist. However, kids can still decide to go somewhere and forfeit their fifty bucks. Only problem is they won't know until late- too late for you to get into private housing.

When did you pay your $50 fee? I paid mine in January. If paying my fee doesn't secure a spot for me, then what good does it do? I'm so confused. I think I'll just bring a cardboard box with me to Austin to live in. All in favor of starting a U-Haul box community on campus? Just kidding!
I don't live in IL anymore. I live in Texas now.

do you mean contracts or applications? I didn't think contracts came out until June of July

Wait, I applied on Sept 24th and have not received anything. They say I'm on the waitiling list. I haven't receieved a contract. Are you saying that thousands of kids (I don't know exactly the capacity of the dorms) applied for housing before me and thus have contracts?

Are they going by the date you sent your $50 for the application, or the $300 deposit itself??? I'm lost

:(  :(  :(  :(  :(

The date does matter. It should decide when you get your contract and the order of it when you pay your enrollment deposit. If you are a freshman you should have paid your deposit long ago because it's refundable anyways. After you pay the deposit and have a housing application active then they go down a list and give you a housing contract as one opens up. As you can see they're first come first serve in a sense. It rewards mainly people that committed to UT at a very early time.

Guys, I don't really understand it myself. I am just repeating verbatim what the overly cheery lady told me. All I am saying is that it is kind of screwy but hopefully for us a lot of people will drop. Oh and because I am obsessive, if you add up all of the capacity numbers on the ut site for the residence dorms, it only comes up to like a little under 7,000. Aren't there like 50,000 kids that go to UT? That seems a tad bit ridiculous.
-btw are all of you guys from texas?

But aren't most of kids in dorms only the freshman? Last year there was 5,965 freshman. That's why I don't understand how the spots are already filled up. I don't think like 5,500 all decided the day they got accepted that they would be coming and already picked their dorm. I'm sure a lot of them are waiting for other acceptances and aid.

Yes, the dorms are mostly intended for the freshman mainly. Most move out into apartments after one year. But I seriously don't think all the spaces are filled up as in there are no more. Like what I think is, as more upper classmen DO NOT renew their contracts, they become open for us incoming freshman to take up. So don't fret. Yes, it's all full, but there's bound to be more upperclassmen ditching the dorms.

i'm originally from IL, but I have TX residency because I've lived here for three years
