Housing

I am trying to find out about housing at UMich. I have looked at the housing website but want to talk to someone about what the dorms are really like. Does anyone know of any good boards or anyone I could talk to about this? Hopefully I can get some good input here, but just in case let me know. Thanks.

I am going to be a soph in the fall @ UM perhaps I can help.

Whatcha need to know?

Well, I'm gonna be an engineer and was thinking about applying to South or West Quad. I hear that they are the best and most fun. I'm not gonna go out drinking every night, so I think I may want to stay away from the Hill. I may sound like a transendentalist, but I want to be able to get outside and run around a lot, or just have a field to play frisbee :-p. Just want to know if these are the best places.

You can't apply to be in any specific dorm unless your in Honors LSA for SQ. SQ and WQ are very close to the party scene area, but the Hill dorms are near Palmer field easy to play frisbee (however with all the snow its a little difficult) but SQ and WQ are near the Diag. Hill doesnt = drinking unless your in Markley. There always is the option of switching rooms via waitlist or room swap board once you sign you contract or reassignment board before you sign where the U gave you.

I think you can only choose an area - Hill, Central or North (unless you're in Honors, Residential College or one of the learning communities). Unless you're in one of these or an athlete, there's a very small chance that you'll be on Central Campus as a freshman. It's about 50-50 that you'll be on North or the Hill. If you're female, there are the women's dorms - Stockwell, Barbour and Newberry.

...and cook.

Right -- Martha Cook for cookies (women). Very beautiful and a little old fashioned - good if you like tea and maybe wish you'd gone to Smith.

hey does anyone know when the housing deadline is? I can't apply for housing yet cos i haven't received my uniq name and password.. should i be worried??

the housing deadline is 30 days after you get the notice that your housing app is ready.....after 30 days, i'm sure they'll take your app but can't guarantee housing to you

I believe Michigan guarantees housing to ALL incoming freshman.

That is true they do guarantee housing to ALL freshman. However, I would call housing @ 734-763-3164 just to double check.

anyone know what the "application priority date" means on the housing status page?

thanx

I would guess cutoff date to be in the orignal "lottery" to get central campus dorms.
