How about a good ol' chances for me?

Here are my stats:

Male from Bangladesh

High school record:
GCE O' Levels: 10 A's (Highest nationwide marks in English Language)
GCE A'Levels: 4 A's at A2 Level, 1 A at AS Level (Highest nationwide marks in Physics)

Currently studying economics at a local university, gpa so far is probably 4.0

SATs:
SAT I: 2400 (Essay 9)
SAT II: Physics, Chemistry, Math II all in Dec, still haven't got the results

ECs (decent but not too impressive):

Chess: Played in several chess tournaments, won 6th place in national school chess championships in 2004. I play mostly on the Internet these days, rating is around 2000.
Founder and president of the school chess club, organised a chess tournament and taught chess to other students in the school.

Basketball: Have been playing for a few years, played for the school team
Also play some other sports, like soccer, cricket.

Writing: Regular contributor to school magazine

Cultural and Literary Prefect at my school.
Also won prizes in some debating, poetry and speech competitions in 9th and 10th grade.

Volunteer work: Working for a nonprofit library, has been about 1 year.

Recommendations: One from my chemistry teacher and another from my economics teacher, both should be good.

Essays: Wrote two which look good (at least to me). Still have to write two more.

I'm planning to major in economics, and I'll be needing financial aid. Applying to the following universities as freshman:

1) USA: Harvard, Yale, Amherst
2) Singapore: NUS
3) Hong Kong: HKUST, CUHK

So can anyone evaluate my chances esp at the US unis and NUS?

I can only comment on US universities. But really no one can tell whether anyone will get Harvard or Yale or Amherst for that matter. So I'll just comment on your stats. They are pretty good and if you applied to more US universities you would get into most of them.

eeeeh ur stats luk great (and next to mine -- hell yeah)!! yep ur definitely goin places..g'luk

thx everyone for your comments. Anyone else has an opinion?

I'm coming from a similar situation academically, if not EC-wise, so I'll put in my 2 cents. Consider safeties in the US. Applying to Harvard, Yale and Amherst only is a bit of a risk. If you applied to a few matches/safeties, which, with your stats should be pretty easy, you would have a more balanced list. Is there any particular reason you've picked these 3 over others?

You have the hit the spot with the last comment, there is a particular reason. As I mentioned above, I am already enrolled in a university, which makes me ineligible to apply as freshman to most US universities. Except for these three, most universities I contaced required me to apply as transfer, something I am not prepared to do right now.

Also to be honest I am not that anxious to study in the US, I would be perfectly happy to go to NUS or failing that HKUST or CUHK (and if those fail as well, I have still more options planned, though I'm not thinking about them!).

Are you sure that these 3 are the only ones that will let you apply as a freshman ?

I researched many websites and contacted a lot of colleges, and yes these were the only 3 I could find. I am not saying these are the only 3 that will let me, but remember I need fin. aid as well which in any case restricts my choices.

if u r who i think u r, im surprised ur even botherin to ask 4 evaluation...
(im guessin u went 2 mm and hv a sister with a cute bunny face :))

good guess lol
