How accurate are my PSAT scores in terms of how I will do on the SAT?

I’m a sophomore in high school and took the PSAT for the first time this year. I got a 1250/1520, which I’m not happy with, but I’m not angry with either. 640 for reading and writing, 620 for math. My score is on the 95th percentile( 94th percentile for math, 96th percentile for reading and writing). I don’t expect to reach the 99th percentile for National Merit Scholar by the next time I take it, but I was wondering how much I could judge my PSAT scores on how good I will do on the SAT. Between now and the time I take the SAT, I will have taken an SAT prep course, taken the PSAT a second time, have studied on my own, and maybe have had a tutor. My goal is at least in the 1400s. Is this possible?

It is definitely possible! I got a 1260 on my sophomore PSAT and then a 1340 on my junior PSAT (last October). Today, I took the real SAT, and I am 98% I passed the 1400 mark. The only preparation I did was doing both the practice math sections yesterday which drastically helped me.

Keep in mind that I didn’t prepare for any of these tests really, so your gold should definitely be achievable.

A high school junior I know got 1310 on his sophomore PSAT, 1400 on his junior PSAT, and 1470 on the SAT taken just one month after the PSAT. No course, just some self study using Khan Academy.

Hey @katnissjul

You can definitely bring your score up into the 1400’s, maybe higher, with a lot of studying. Khan Academy’s ok but I never used it. Buy the official SAT book if you can afford it or download the tests off the collegeboard site (free!) and practice with those. In my case, my PSAT scores were very good indicators for my SAT scores though, but both were pretty high. Good luck in your high school career.
