I am currently a junior at a public high school. I am 13th in my class of 166 and have a 3.8 UW GPA. I recently took my SATs for the first time (No PSATs either...) and received my scores today. Are they good/bad/any recommendations?

CR: 660
Writing: 630
Math: 610

total: 1900/2400

I plan on studying political science/economics.

Depends on which school you’re applying to.

I’m not looking at Yale or anything, but I’d like to get into a good school. I’m just worried I didn’t do as well as I probably should have for a (supposedly) bright kid.

Since you took the test as a junior, I expect that you’ll take them again in your senior year. 6-months or so could easily make a difference. Also the experience of having taken the tests once should help the second time. If you have limited experience in taking such tests, a brief test preparation course can prove helpful. There are no guarantees … but you may be able to improve your score by 100 points in a second try.

There are many colleges where the median SAT score of accepted students is at or lower than yours. So at least from the perspective of SAT scores you should have many match schools when you apply next year.
