I recently received my scores for my first SAT and I got a 1610. I didn't really study for this test....ok I didn't study at all...because since it was my first time it was more of a trial just to get a feel for the test.

I just wanted some feed back about the score and whether it is decent and everything. And how I can improve on the math portion (because that's where I did the worst).

But I did do good on the essay portion. I scored an 8! (:

If I had to define it, I’d say a “good” SAT score falls in the 1800+ range, or maybe 1900, depending on who you’re talking to. A 1610 is roughly the average score for high school juniors.

Here at CC, however, 2200-2290 is okay, 2300-2340 is good, 2350-2390 is pretty good, and 2400 is slightly impressive but mostly overrated. 2100-2190 is the “retake range”, and anything below that is an acceptable justification for suicide.

You’ve got to look at a score in regards t owhere you want it to take you. For a small non-flagship state school, sure. But, flagship probably not.

I did not prepare as much for this test because I went into this as a trial just to get a feel for the test, what the questions are like, how to pace myself, etc. This isn’t a score I’ll be sending into schools.

Even if it is on my transcripts it really isn’t so bad…at least it’s not like a 1400 or something…Trust me, I think this score is very low and I am currently aiming for a 1900.

I just wanted to know if it was a good score for someone who has never taken the SAT before.

Score Breakdown:
590 - critical reading
510 - math
510 - writing
49 on multiple choice
8 on essay

I’m still compiling a definite list of colleges to apply to later this year but my top choices are UNC Chapel Hill, UVA, and Virginia Tech.

I know my score is low for UNC Chapel Hill and UVA but it’s definitely high for VA Tech.

some schools don’t even look at the writing section, so yes, try to get that score up but really work on reading and writing. what do you want to do? definitely try to up your math score, that’s usually the highest when you look at schools averages. i think it’s fine for your first time. i know people who have taken the sat 4+ times. if you think you can do better, always go for it.
