How are the fitness centers at Cornell?

Tennis courts are free. Theres 3 groups of them on North Campus (behind Appel, beside A-lot, and next to Risley) and one behind the Engineering quad (somewhere). There are also indoor tennis courts somewhere nearby, but membership seemed prohibitively expensive...

there is a lap pool on north

hey, I was wondering if any of the gyms (in particular the ones on the south end of campus) have lockers you can rent out for the month or year? and also if they have showering facilities?

I know that Helen Newman, the gym on North Campus, has 'baskets' that you can rent for $25 for the year, including a combo lock. They are relatively large (I could squeeze a pair of sneakers and a change of clothes in, though snugly). They had showers in there, but since it's right near the dorms (and since most users were freshman who lived there anyway) they were rarely used. The facilities at Appel are small and do not have baskets/showers, just machines.
The 'south part' of campus would be Teagle Gym, and I'm pretty sure that they have lockers/baskets and shower facilities, though I've never been there myself.

row machines, ahh it brings back the good old days of crew

When the new Noyes Community Center opens in Jan. the gym is going to be amazing, it's about time that west campus gets a nice gym.

north campus is where it's at, screw the upperclassmen

do people realize how absurd it is to charge students a fitness center membership fee? even if cornell figures they'll deduct the fee from tuition to not penalize the people who don't use it, they forget that deduction and ramp up tuition to normal levels. most schools include fitness center access in tuition.

and i'm certainly no connoisseur of college gyms (that would be a crazy job), but i've yet to see a university gym worse than cornell's. at GWU, Northwestern, and Haverford (that's the limit of my experiences), they offer newer facilities and more equipment with no additional charge.

just to consider...

wow this is an old thread.. one that i posted on a couple of years ago.

now that i have first hand experience with the gyms.. i have to say it is very disappointing. Charging a fee for membership is indeed totally ridiculous. nearly all schools provide this as a part of enrollment.

not to mention the facilities are not great- they serve their purpose but are definitely not 'state of the art' as some may have implied. appel is ridiculous- 3 treadmills?! (well 4.. but one has been 'out of order' for the last year and a half...solid). HNH is better, but still nothing special. and noyes, which was supposed to be the crowned jewel as far as fitness facilities go, is just a very poorly designed building that is not much more than a newer version of HNH with a convenience store. i remember when it was being built people were like 'its even going to have a rock climbing wall!'.... wait til you see it for yourself- its not much more than a fence with pegs on it.

as a transfer from northwestern, the facilities they had (SPAC gym was insane and probably the size of all of cornells gyms put together with MUCH newer/better/more equipment- free of any additional charge) were far superior.
