How bad off am I for the UCs (business route)

So here's my deal: My overall gpa will be at the lowest, a 3.25 overall and at the highest a 3.4. Unfortunately I missed the TAG date so that is over. As for pre-reqs I am currently fulfilling them because I just figured out what I want to do, and that is Business. As far as the UCs are concerned there aren't exactly Business majors, but there are majors that I would consider suitable enough.

So:

UCB - of course Bus Admin in Haas if by some phantom chance I enter.
UCSB - Econ & Accounting
UCI - Bus Admin
UCLA - Biz Econ, same case as Berkeley
UCD - Econ (preferably not going here because I'm not sure how useful Econ is to me)

I am not particularly interested in the other UCs that are generally lower ended unless I can't get into any of the above and or if they are better regarded than the CSUs which I am not sure about. In the event that I can't get into decent UCs I'd better go somewhere else because I want to do a Bachelors that will allow me to pass the CPA license (for accountants) so it's better that I do an Accounting major and I won't consider it worth it to compromise unless I can get into a decent school. I know for certain that I am going for grad school in the UCs for Finance, hopefully Haas. Am I correct in assuming that Haas isn't as hard to get into for grad school comparably to undergrad?

As for GPA. If I get straight A's this semester it will move me to 3.3x overall and if I get a B it will move me to 3.25. I am currently at 3.0 flat. I will be having a very strong upward trend I think. Here's my whole progression:

summer 2012

intro psych A
gov P

fall 2012

marine bio C
geology C
art A
Sociology B

spring 2012

intro music A
world music A
General Chem 1 D
freshman English A
modern Psych A
trig C

summer 2013

critical thinking English B
pre-calc online C

fall 2013 (now)

analytical calc and geometry 1
retaking general Chem
Stats
macro-econ
2Ws (one of them was a dropped premed class)

So if I get all A's this semester then It will move to a 3.3x and if I get a B, which may happen for chemistry then it will be 3.25. I'm doing really well in everything, contrary to what it would seem I in my history, math was my best subject in high school and everything but I didn't try at all in my first year and you can not do hw and still do well in some classes but not math, basically no matter what. Same with Chem basically. I was going into medicine at first but now decided to to do Business and Law. As for why I mentioned 3.4 GPA, if I find online institutions that are accredited and that I can get financial aid, and are accelerated classes (common) and I do well than I can move my gpa to a 3.4 and show the UCs the pre-reqs completed with most likely good grades. I just need some ideas on whether or not that is worth it. They'll be completed in spring for sure though. As of now I still need micro-econ, calc 2, bus stats, and intro bus. Some of the UCs list Accounting classes but they are optional.

I'm a good essay writer and I have quite a few ideas and personal stories to tell, only now I hear that some of the mid UCs don't even care about them. That is not good news to me.

Also just now in my research I saw some random post about how counselors can completely erase you record and have you start from scratch. Is that true? Doesn't seem realistic.

Will these factors help? My Chem teacher says that if I can get an A in her class I qualify to tutor it and my major GPA is probably going to be a 4.0. I will probably be able to tutor math next semester. Also, my course load was heavy for most of the time summer classes are accelerated 3x. My community college is also one of the best in CA. That's what I hear, I have no idea as to how they sort of "ranked" community colleges. I don't think these factors help though... Also that D that I got was for an unnecessary class because I thought I was going into medicine. I ended up taking a lot of extra classes I think. Because for science/engineering majors your core classes can count for IGETC/GE's but I don't know about Business.

It hasn't been very long since I even knew that TAG existed because I was going to stay in CC for 3 years because that's how long engineering pre-reqs take I think. And I didn't know about assist.org or that that UCs only take in the Fall or anything so it's all kind of a shock to me.

Oh yeah, the Chem class. I was taking so many pre-med classes (dropped) that I didn't worry so much about that repeated Chem class. I divided my time as best as I could but now I think it's almost impossible to get an A. A B should be easy though, I'm going to speak with her.

I am going to apply everywhere this month and everything. What are other good places in CA to apply? USC for one, where else?

Any thoughts or advice would be great.

Sorry to tell you this but you seem like either a slacker or dumb. You have poor grades in the sciences and maths. UCB and UCLA except ALL the pre-reqs completed. and A’s in major classes such as Calc 1 and 2. if you can get all A’s in your pre-reqs then maybe you have a chance for UCB. UCLA you are probably screwed at with your GPA. UCI idk, but probably the same. Econ at UCSB is doable tho.

^Don’t be rude, bomerr.

I actually think you might more suitable at the CSU’s - considering your GPA is pretty low. Also, the average GPA for USC is a 3.7 - so I don’t think that would be a good chance for you either. But you never know, so best of luck to you.

Did you read all of what I wrote above? All of it applies to why what I’m trying to get out of making this thread you know… If you did explain some of your reasoning. I already stated that I am almost guaranteed to get A’s in all the pre-req classes including Calc 1. Will you still look dumb if you get an A in Calc but a C in trig and pre-calc? Cal is more forgiving then I suppose…and UCI doesn’t have a high transfer GPA the last I checked so what’s with that. I already stated that all pre-reqs will be completed by spring.

Alright, is my GPA average or low for them? Are some harder to get into and which are those? I don’t know anything about the CSUs yet. Yeah I was just using USC as an example, what other schools in CA can I probably get into?

If you had all F’s your first semester. Or you took a gap year off and had a track record of 3 or 4 semesters with all A’s… maybe your grade trend would look good. But right now it’s a mess. A over here, D over here, C’s everywhere. It doesn’t look good. Especially how you get low grades in the sciences (chem, marine biology, geology) and the maths. I don’t think 1 A in Calc 1 with analytical geometry will outweigh that.

The average transferable UC GPA is 3.2-3.4. So obviously you want to shoot higher than that for competitive majors. There is another thread on here with a guy getting into UCB econ with a 3.63. Without a 3.6+ I don’t think you have a much of a chance. I also talked to someone who got into Haas this year. He said his friend with a 3.6 gpa got rejected at UCLA but accepted at UCB. UCB is really the only school that puts a heavy weight on personal statement. Even so you still need the grades. If you want to apply this fall they will have to go off your track record so far which isn’t that great. If you hold off and get 1 year of solid A’s in this fall, winter/spring, next summer and next fall then you’ll have a shot. As-is I’d only rec UCSB and like the other guy said CSUs.

If your goal is to go into business then you’re going about this wrong.
In business reputation is everything. No one cares about your major. They want to see big names on your resume. Think Ivy league and Fortune 500 companies.

Get into the best uni you can, your major doesn’t matter. When you’re in, graduate with honors. I honestly don’t know what the difference between econ and business econ at UCR is. No one else does either and no one cares. Take the easiest path to a high GPA.

The top “business” positions are aimed towards people at top 25 universities. Think Harvard and Yale. A History major from Princeton has more “business” opportunities than a business economics major from UCLA.

Once you’re in at your good uni, take on a few leadership positions, get a few internships and get really aggressive with networking. Part of this requires excessive interview prep.

FYI, business schools like seeing big names and high GPAs. They usually don’t care about your major. The exception would be financial engineering. In that case they like seeing a math-heavy courseload. Don’t do FE. MBA programs all expect around 5 years of work experience.
