how big is the campus?

can you ride your bike across in ~10 mins?

It's pretty damn big. I'm not sure if you can ride the bike across the campus in 10 minutes. It stretches out for a longgg way. I remember driving along the side of UCSD and it seemed like it was never going to end.

According to wiki:

UCSD: 1,152 acres (4.66 km²)
UCLA: 419 acres (1.7 km²)

hell yeah UCSD IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!......um i wish their cheer squad was co-ed....but watever......

o_0;;

Well, yea, you can ride crosscampus in about that time. It took me 15 mins to jog from the theatre district to warren lecture hall with a heavy backpack on. So I'm pretty sure you can do it in 10 with a bike.

Also, it takes about 7 minutes to walk half the campus (i.e. Muir to Warren). 5 minutes from Muir to Center Hall/Price Center.

Not sure what Rudymentary's on about...

Anyway, I rode my bike to most of my classes last year, and I can tell you that it is possible to get from Warren dorms to York Hall (which is probably one of the farthest spans across campus) in 8 minutes, if you know the shortest route, and if you pedal stupid fast and manage to avoid foot traffic. It's very tiring though - I'd come in huffing and puffing (and I'm in fairly good shape), and my thighs would tighten up when I sat down for class.

10 minutes is doable, 15 minutes is quite a bit easier.

well im going to be a freshmen this year...so wat do you recommed? I mean like do we need a bike to go to classes since they are far??? or can you drive to classes? what are they issues on that?

No, you can't drive around campus, really. To a degree you can, but you'd really rather walk or take a bike around or ride a skateboard.

I just walked around, because a bike was too much of a hassle for me, and I never got enough money for a skateboard/short longboard. I would recommend a skateboard, especially if you know how to ride one already.

No worries, Rudy, your freshman enthusiasm will see its course with this first year.

is the shuttle a practical option?

The shuttle is slower than walking.

The campus is only like a mile long. You can walk from corner to corner in 15 minutes. You can probably bike it in 5ish.

*I walk fast. These statements won't apply to some people. Not to generalize, but there are some girls I know who walk ridiculously slowly. For them, the shuttle is much faster than walking.

If you want to go from... say, Revelle to Marshall and you're too lazy to walk, yea, it's ok. But if you want to go from Revelle to Warren, it takes too long; 25 mins? Walking is much more practical.

Edit: Ooops, didn't realize someone replied before me.

The main campus isn't that big. Yea, it convers a lot of acres, but that includes all of the associated campuses like the med school and all that. As an undergraduate, you will be on the main campus. I can ride my bike from Revelle to Roosevelt in about 5 minutes, and to Warren Lecture Hall in about 6 or 7. Even so, if you walk at a decent pace, it only takes about 15 minutes to walk anywhere. Of course, that depends on where you are living too. I know lots of people that don't have bikes and get along fine. I brought my bike, and used it a lot of the first quarter and then didn't use it at all the next quarters because my classes all happened to be right near where I was living.

i live in warren so i always shuttle to revelle unless i have a class before in marshall. =PP
i also shuttle to peterson to avoid going up that hill. yeah im lazy. =P

i walked from revelle to the jacobs engineering building at warren in about 10-15 mins, from revelle to marshall i walked for about 8-10 mins.

Wow, ric, you're fast... I could never walk to warren that quickly...

yea i learned to walk fast since when i was a kid my dad walked fast and i had to hurry up. During orientation the campus was empty so i dont know how fast i can walk to warren

You guys may want to check out this link. Very useful.

If I walk fast, I think I can walk a mile in 12-13 minutes. So if I plug that in, it tells me it takes me 7 minutes to go from Tioga to Warren, which is accurate. :)

I guess ric walks a mile in 12 minutes normally.

I remember that website! Someone showed it to me once... Its wrong sometimes though... It tells me that the closest S parking lot to Muir apartments is in Revelle, even though there is an S parking lot in Muir...

Yea, of course, it needs to be taken with a grain of salt. There's a faster way to get to Warren from Tioga too. ;) There are shortcuts all over.

Man, I dunno how to ride a skateboard/longboard, I'd love to scooter around, but scooters aren't "COOL" so :</p>

I've seen people use scooters... I would never dare to myself, hoewver... Do you know how to unicycle??? I've seen a couple of those around, and those are pretty cool, if you ask me...
