How big of a deal is ELC?

I got that ELC thing a few months ago and I've been wondering exactly how good it is. Does it really mean anything, or does it only matter if you are going to medium level schools under relativity easy majors? How much will it affect me? I'm interested in the following colleges (Will ELC help me out with any of these under my major?):

Cal Poly -- San Luis Obispo
UC Berkeley Engineering (College of Engineering, I believe is what it's called)
UC San Diego
Caltech
UC Los Angeles
UC Davis

Thanks!

I got ELC too, and all I know is that it guarantees admission to at least one UC school. It's probably a strength just because it means you have high class rank. If nothing else, you'll get into UC Merced or something.
I could use some more info about this too, if anyone has anything...

ELC only guarentees you admission into a few UCs. I think last year it was UCSB, UCI and UCR. I'm not sure. But if you only apply to UCSD, UCLA, UCD and UCB, it doesn't guarentee you admission into one of those school. It does, however, earn your points.

How, I know that it won't guarantee me admission into those schools, but I just want to know what it'll do for me (How much it'll boost my chances of getting into those listed schools compared to if I wasn't ELC qualified).

ELC really only helps the kids who wouldn't be in the top 12% in the state, mostly kids from underperforming schools. Those kids might not have gotten into any UC without ELC. For other kids it doesn't matter. A fairly high % get into top UCs (60 +%) because they are at the top of their classes and have good scores, not because they are ELC!

It really doesn't matter to you at all.

You were already pretty much guarenteed admissions at Merced and this doesn't change much.

Just_Browsing - I'm pretty sure ELC doesn't apply only to Merced...

Anyone else?

s/he meant that ELC won't guarentee you into any school that you couldn't have gotten into already. Schools like UCSD have a point system for admissions. You earn points based on your GPA, SAT scores, ECs etc. If you get above a certain total you're admitted. ELC gets you some that count towards that total. I don't know about the other UCs,but I heard Davis does something similar to the point system.

All in all, ELC doesn't really help you that much. You can check the UCSD point system outline though.

For schools like Cal Poly and Caltech, it won't help at all. It only applys to the UC system. UCB and UCLA probably don't put that much weight in it either (esp. EECS) because almost everyone that has a good shot of getting in has ELC too.
