I am from Virginia and it gets cold here during the winter but Im sure nothing like Maine. I really like the cold but I was just wondering if students ever get sick of it being cold all of the time. Is it ever really miserable?

I have the same question. If you're going stir crazy in March from the winter, how do you work it off?

I live in New England and I dont really consider the winter brutal. I'm used to it..but still. It's cold, but I mean, cover up, turn on the heat, you're fine.

The cold and the snow are for real -- some adapt, others put up with it, and then the rest bail out. But even more formidable is the lack of sunlight as you head north. It is well known that inhabitants of the northern regions are more likely to be hit by seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which can be debilitating. Best advice is to visit during the winter to get a taste of what life would be like living in Maine.

It's all in what you make of it - I, too, am from New England, so the winter months weren't much of a shock for me. You just have to dress for it (a trip to LL Bean should do the trick, if you don't already own a warm coat); however, with that said, I don't really own a super-warm winter jacket and I haven't put on a pair of winter boots in like three years (I'm not sure if that is indication that winters "aren't that bad" or just indication that I'm lazy...).

I think the winters end up actually being a lot of fun - snowball fights, gorgeous scenery, and lots of cool outing club opportunities if you're into that. And you're definitely not the only person in this situation - on my floor freshman year, there were a few people that had never seen snow before, and who had no idea what to expect from Maine winters. But I also agree completely with the person who suggested visiting during the winter - like he said, the cold is for real, and it really is the kind of thing that has to be decided on a person by person basis.

I'm from southeastern MA and the winters aren't that bad. Slightly colder than what I'm used to, but all of the Northeastern LACs are going to have cold winters. It's a small price to pay for going to such a great school!

Also, to be honest, you don't have to spend a lot of time outside in the first place. Campus is small and it doesn't take long to walk from the dorms to the dining halls and the academics buildings.
