I’m almost positive UCSD, UCD and UCSC do not read the personal statement.

UC Irvine will read your personal statement and take it into consideration.

That is why I asked everyone how to write a personal statement with 2 different majors to satisfy all the UCs

Well…since both Berkeley and Irvine read personal statements and you’re applying to both schools as a math major…talk about math…

I’m sure Irvine won’t mind if you leave out computer science. That’s just my guess. They mostly want to see that you are passionate and a good student.

And someone correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure the PS statement can only help you, not hurt you.

The first paragraph of your personal statement, one or 2 sentences, ought to clarify the aim of your writing: to present an interpretive sumurry of your background, educational interests, and future goals as justification for your admission to a program of graduate study.

I’d start by talking about math, if I were you. Make it your primary major for the essay, since Berkeley gives it more weight than the other UCs. As for computer science…maybe just talk about how it’s an application of mathematics that you’re particularly interested in. Somehow, find a way to emphasize your interest in computers within the scope of your interest in math. For Berkeley, it’ll give them a stronger idea of what you’re interested in doing with your math degree. For the other UCs, they’ll see why you picked both majors.

Maybe there’s a better way; I don’t know. I was lucky enough to only have one major to write about, but I always wondered what happens to people double majoring in things like…art history and chemistry or something. At least yours work together. Good luck!

I applied as a sociology major for 3 schools and psych and social behavior for just Irvine…I just wrote my essay on socio since that was my top school’s (LA) major. So irvine read a statement about why I decided on a socio major and I still got accepted.
