I have taken economics for IGCSE and got an A* in it - I currently take it for IB as an HL; I’m hoping to major in Economics in college. For math, I got a 9 in my IGCSE and take it for my HL too.
But I’m not really sure how to show this interest through my application.
For economics, alongside having my own blog, I run a club with a fellow student helping younger economics students with learning and revision for their tests and clarifying their doubts on the subject.
for math, I got a Silver in the UKMT last year and a Bronze this year. I will also be doing the University of Waterloo comp. but I feel like I need more?
Where are you thinking of applying?
Why do you think that involvement and awards in math competitions and running a club/publishing a blog related to economics would not have someone think you are interested in math and economics?
@Lindagaf my top schools at the moment are probably Princeton, Columbia, and UChicago - Their courses are really interesting and appeal to me a lot
@RichInPitt purely because I have so much competition - even in my own school, and I’m not sure if I’m doing enough
Those are the most popular colleges in your fields of interest. Of course you will have competition. So the fact is that you will never do enough, but are also doing more than enough. You are doing extremely well in pursuing your interests, and it’s very clear that you like math and economics and are very good at them. But when you are trying to vie with another 35,000 students for a couple hundred places, there is little you can do to have any level of assurance that you will be accepted.
In short, if your GPA and SATs are good, I would say that you have done enough to be competitive for any college out there, but there is no way to do enough to make the your top colleges anything less than a reach, unless it is getting a Nobel prize in economics or a Fields medal in math.
Working alongside adults in the field, experiencing that milieu and the range of work undertaken, can be nice evidence of drives and energies. And a blog is generally a solitary effort. What opportunities to add something more? You’ve got nearly year to explore and get involved on another level. Imo, always a good idea to keep thinking.
