How can I improve my reading comprehension for the ACT or SAT?

I had taken the ACT back in March, and I would consider myself to be an intelligent student as I have a 5.0 GPA at a fairly competitive school.

Upon taking the ACT Plan, I was projected to score around a 33, though I expected to make around a 30 composite score on the ACT provided that I did not prepare whatsoever; however, I received my score back and only made a 28. In math I made a 33; in English a 35; a 31 on the writing portion; in science I made a 25. However, in reading I was barely below the benchmark for what is considered acceptable (20 or 21, can’t remember) and that really destroyed my score.

It’s really odd to me that I did so well in English yet so terrible in reading, as I understand all the conventions. I am on guanfacine for attention deficit disorder, though it doesn’t really help for reading comprehension. I find myself reading sentences over and over because I don’t fully “absorb” the material. Is there any way that I could improve my reading comprehension skills solely for the ACT? I mean, I’m certain that if I could bring my score up 10 points it would bring my composite score into the 30s.

Are there any ideas? I am preparing in all facets to prepare myself for the next ACT testing opportunity in September. Thanks, guys!

I’m in a similar situation as you. When I got my April Statewide ACT results I got a 20 on the reading section but a 30 on the English section. I’ve been consistently getting 30s on the English section but my scores fluctuate alot on the reading section. The last time I took the ACT other than this one was the December one in which I got a 25 in reading. The reading section is by far the hardest section for me because I’m just a slow reader. I can’t absorb all of the info quickly (especially on the Arts/Literature section), though I tend to do better on the Social Studies/Science section. I got a 14 on the Social Studies/Sciences section but a 7 on the Arts/Literature! That’s a huge difference. Anyways, I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s very terrible at reading.
